At the end of this year I will be putting a driver in my truck and buying another 1 because I live in California. I know most of what I have to do but I am worried about finding a good driver and what do company drivers really care about besides money? The driver will be payed percentge drive a older very clean truck that has been well maintained and be treated with respect. What am I missing?

nothing as far as i can see. while money is not everything a driver cares about (safe equipment is paramount in my book, then money, treatment by boss(es), home time, and benefits/bonuses, in that order), it is why most of us are doing this. if you can offer a fair wage, youll have drivers knocking down your door. (knock knock)...see? one already interested lol.

The wages, great treatment, safe truck I can offer but the medical Im sure that will not be an option. Without medical do u think most drivers will say no to me as an employer

I would't think no medical would be a deal breaker but, if your not going to pay your portion of taxes and do the 1099 deal?. That will definitely cut your driver prospects.

I have another business outside of trucking and this is what I've learned:

More people quit over poor management then poor pay. If you're fair and treat your people with respect they more than likely will accept less pay. While they are the employee it is you who really works for them. It's your job to see that they have everything they need to accomplish their job. I'm not saying you have to run and fetch for them but they need to know that when something goes wrong they can count on you to find a solution in a hurry.

Why not sit down with your potential driver and ask them what it is they really need for them to drive for you. Have them write it down on paper. Once that's done, go over it line by line and make notes to let them know that you really understand what they are saying. Once that's done you can evaluate and discuss what you can pay and provide as an employer. Try and make it a win/win for you both. If both of you can't win, then there should be no deal. Both of you have to have realistic expectations.

I do think you'll be able to find a driver. It may be harder to find a professional truck driver. I think the key is writing down what it is that you really want in a driver and then go over it and see what's a want and what's a need.

This is what I had to do and it helped.

anyone working for a small biz or o/o is already aware of the no benefits thing. i put that last only because no trucking company can beat what my wife gets as a nurse...so i dont take benefits even when offered. no it wont be a problem...of course the pool of potential takers is smaller but still wont be hard to find someone. ive been out of otr as well for a couple years...doing local thats not panning out so well...boss cant keep me busy, so im going back on the road. and yeah, id still potentially be interested.

Unless you are prepared to have lots and lots of headaches, never buy more trucks than you intend to drive yourself.
