financing a motor for an 06 can be done. good luck financing to rebuild a truck over 10 years old unless you take a loan against your house.

Two words...Credit Union...
landstar8891 Thanks this. -
two more words:
Fitzgerald Glider.
note that the speedo is not visible...!
75 mph and almost 7 mpg. you could never convince me they are not the way to go.
all this insurance cost stuff...it is less than $75 a month to cover this $100k truck vs a $40K truck.
700 a month covers the Glider at 100k value, a stepdeck at 20k value and a dry van at 15k value.
620 a month covers an O/O leased on with us at 45k vaule truck and 70K value trailer (rgn).
most of cost of our insurance is the cargo. around 500 a month. so if your leased to a big company that pays cargo, then there is very little cost difference for a $75k more value truck.landstar8891 Thanks this. -
BigJ:
I get what you're saying but specific statements regarding MPG are notoriously unreliable at best and dashboard read outs are completely unreliable. Unless one can produce 6-12 months of fill up records I don't believe any of them. And even then, areas of operation and load weights make such huge differences that the MPG numbers don't mean that much.
For all the talk about pre EGR Detroit's , my EGR Mercedes does 5% better than my 94 Series 60 did doing exact the same job on the exact same roads. -
I also would not base a new truck/glider decision on a projected improved fuel economy.
I can count on at least 6.25 over the course of a year and over 125,000 miles, 7.25 would save $11,000 at $4/gallon.
But a $100,000 truck depreciates $30,000 a year while you pay interest on it.
I'm not saying there isn't a time and place for a glider or new truck, but for over $100,000 it had better be legal in Kalifornia and speculating on projected MPG is a gamble at best.Last edited: Jul 4, 2013

MY dash actually reads low. only like .10 off. and the truck was speced to roll 12.7/13/3.42, tall 22.5.
mpg has alot more to do with setup than just motor choice, we spec'd it to run 75 at 1500 rpm, perfect.
not sure about the 30k a year depetion. look in the truck paper 07 gliders with at/or less than 500k miles are going for 40k to 50k. thats a 50k loss after 5 years and 450k miles. Ill take that.
California you have to pay 160k for a new truck, at 50k more than a glider and less milage, well thats a decision that seems easy to make for me. his current truck anint legal either.
I personally dont buy into the slow down for fuel money, at this point for us the pay per miles is 3 times better than the fuel saving, however thats not what this thread is about.
I dont think the OP is going to accomplish: inframe, rebuilt trans and rears for less than 40k.
So he sells his truck for 10k, takes the 40k investment he was going to make, he has a BRAND new truck/glider half paid for.
that in 5 years is still worth 40k. whats his truck going to worth in 5 years. still 10k?Lone Ranger 13 Thanks this. -
I agree completely .he should base it on many factors but number one should be RETURN ON INVESTMENT -
Agreed. Don't know if you realize this but I am the OP.
I won't be doing rears right now as there aren't any symptoms and I'll get them to pull the top off the trans and have a look, if there's nothing obvious, it's going back in as is. There are no symptoms from the trans either.
I'm going with a crate engine because the MBE has the cam in the block and can't be done unless the engine comes out anyways. Plus the warranty is so much better on a reman.
I'm curious about your specs. Are you happy with them? Would you get the same again? -

Bob, well shoot I don't realize that u were the OP. I was really worried about jacking your thread and turning it into a glider debate. I really just wanted to stress the economics of the investment. Also I thought u were going thru the whole drive train....that was the basis that I thought a new glider would be money better spent. ...but if just a motor is in the future it does make it a little more reasonable to put a motor in and drive on.
Yes i absolutely love our setup. But we also spend a lot of time on i10 and i40. Where its pretty flat and high speed limits. If I was running more mountains and slower speed limits I'd probably go 3.73 or 3.58 and low pro tires.Freightlinerbob Thanks this.
