I've been with Averitt for around 2 years in which only 9 months in the otr category. I'm currently making 36cpm but I'm getting close to 2500-3100 miles a week. I'm making good money but I've started to look at other options so I can better myself with my health. In 9 months I gained 30 pounds which sucks completely. Being out two weeks doesn't bother me too much and I enjoy getting out and moving around. Van is great but I get bored and not moving around really puts some strain on your body in a bad way. I called today and the lady told me I would start at .37cpm with $40 tarp pay so they equals out to be around 40 cpm. Now she said in 3 months I would be either .39 or .40 cpm i can't remember. My deal is do you do a lot of downtown deliveries? Can I expect to get around 2500 miles a week or that not going to happen? I haven't driven a 10 speed in around a year so do you have to double clutch or float the gears? Basically an Idea what to expect so they don't send my butt packing after a few days....I was told that i wouldn't have to go with a trainer so all i would be doing was 4 days of orientation then head out with my truck.
Putting myself into better health

Really guy if you want to lose a few pounds. All you have to do is start walking and watching what you eat. There are plenty of overweight flat bed drivers so don't think that's the answer to your problems. Also if you can't encourage yourself to get out and walk or say no to bad eating habits. What makes you think you will want to walk around and tarp in bad weather or tighten those straps and chains on the sides of roads next to crazy 4 wheelers and big trucks.
Puppage Thanks this. -
I'm not going into flatbed for that reason alone. I'm doing it for a change in pace. I know I'll get more for exercise doing flatbed than doing van. I'm not really overweight I just want to be healthier. And I have more motivation to make sure that I keep a safe vehicle. You may not want to strap the load or put chains but you do that for the responsibility to the job and the safety to the people around you. I'm not sure how you can compare me walking at current job which I do on my breaks to doing something I'm required to do in flatbedding .
I don't get where you think I'm lazy. -

I kinda want to add to the whole tarping exercise thing. One thing about flatbedding is your straps/chains securement is sort of your work of art . Its definitely something to be proud of when you do a good job ,not to mention a bad one makes you feel a little embarrassed .....and tarping is a whole nother' story. Tarped loads really can say your lazy or awesome or anal or new at this or weird. Its kinda fun to look at tarp jobs when you know what your looking at. Also when you drive down the road and see one flapping away you think about what you would do differently . I don't speak for all flatbedders but I know quite a few guys that think like me
