Hello all, This is my first post. And i've been trying to read through the site. Lots of good info here. I do have some questions if you guys can help me out.
Im getting ready to take my CDL-A test in a few weeks. I've been taught do use the clutch for first and reverse but in the book it says double clutch . So, my question is should I double clutch every gear when I have the examiner in the truck with me? or should I " float" the gears like I was taught? I've asked several people and seemed to get mixed answers.. So, what should I do? Oh, and in its for Pennsylvania.
Also, our 5th wheel has some " slap" in it. Do you think I need to press the issue to get it replaces before the test. One of my buddies said It should definitly replaced.

    thanks-jjc

Atleast when I took the test, double clutching was required for the actual road test. Double clutching is considered the "proper shifting technique", so I would say - Yes, double clutch during the road test.

But again, I'm not an authority on the matter.

Took my road test today, and not double clutching will cost you points.

For the Illinois test, we were told to double clutch, and were also told it would be the last time we did it.

Our road test was only a few miles, like 20 minutes.

Maybe you can get an answer from the DMV beforehand, HAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAA Sorry, I could not resist....

Same here in Texas. Took my test last week and was required to double clutch or you did lose points on the test. Observation and mirror usage was also a big factor too for the road test just fyi.

Here in CA, the books says so, and I think its the "rule" for un-synchronized transmissions. I know of 2 people who took their test and in the middle, the instructor told them they no longer had to use the clutch if they did not prefer. I had a synchronized box for mine so I single clutched through my test.

It will really depend on the tester as to whether than are hard-nosed about it or not. That said, if you dbl-clutch, you can't get knocked for floating. My 2nd tester (yes I failed the 1st time) noted that I limp on my left leg (old knee injury) and told me that I could float if I preffered.

double clutch. i do it all the time. floating tends to grind the gears.

I rarely grind while floating, no more than I would double clutching.
