    Hi,
I am going to be meeting with a driver trainer here in the next few days. It is my first time trucking. I was wondering, these Qualcom unites they have in the trucks, do they have GPS as well? My company said we must use the Qualcom GPS. I was wondering, is it possible to pair your bluetooth headset to this Qualcom unit to hear the GPS directions? The reason I ask is that I am hearing impaired and kind of rely on my headset to clearly hear the GPS directons from my phone. Do they at least have a headphone jack?

Any company that forces you to use the QC GPS should be avoided.

The Rand is much more reliable and useful. The QC GPS is a waste of time, much like the one on the Zonar.

Is the Qualcomm GPS operated by Co-Pilot? If so then that’s all the reason to use anything else. Co-Pilot is the only thing I’ve found to be worse than Rand McNally.

    What they want?
You are in control of how you operate, not them.

Not during training. During the ride with a trainer period you are almost certainly required to operate by the company preferences. I would ask the trainer and dispatch at different times about the GPS.

I would bring my TRUCK GPS in my duffle bag and bring up the issue. If your GPS is not made for trucking, don't bring it.

Qualcomm GPS is junk. I'd use one of the low tier pad subscription levels of Trucker Path app (truck routing available only on paid versions of Trucker Path) before I used Qualcomm GPS. Maybe the trainer is just cheap, is using free Qualcomm GPS, and claiming it is company policy just to make his opinion THE LAW in his truck. Your trainer has his ways, he is not THE LAW, and some of his ways MIGHT not even be wise or legal. Follow his instructions until you have your own truck. There is a big tendency for people to think my trainer's way is the only way/legal way. It might just be his bad habit. Protect your license, no ody else will.

In my truck I used my RM 740 GPS and left Trucker Path (free version) running on my phone for Google traffic and the truck stop directory & parking status. During training they probably won't allow student to have phone out.

I think my Rand 740 could NOT throw the audio via Bluetooth. It has BT in it, but that was for connecting to their ELD dongle. It has an audio-out jack so you can connect to truck stereo, if it has an Aux-in jack. The Rand 740 is an old unit so the 750 and the Rand tablet/GPS units may have that feature, they certainly have bluetooth. I'll try my Gamin truck GPS to see if it can send audio directions over BT

Yes, during training your trainer is in control.
My comment wasn't meant for that training period, but once the driver goes solo in their own truck.

Even if team driving, when you are responsible for the safe and timely operation of the truck it is you that has control of how you do things.
That is true in large part even while training, even though you may not be allowed to use your own toys.
