Regardless its a load of crap mainly used to calculate fuel stops. If they really do complain tell them to give u a new truck to get better fuel mileage. Its hit or miss luck of the draw on how heavy u are, where u are and how many times that factors in. U get heavy loads in mountainous terrain a lot don't expect it to be over 7 ever. If your light in flat land then 7 to 7+. In a FL Columbia at least from my experience. And yes it'll say 2-3 mpg and 14 mpg for me many times as well. My overall is 7
Quallcom says I'm getting terrible MPG

this happens all the time. ignore the first part-- when it says you're getting 3 miles to the gallon, the one next time generally says you're getting 11. average them, and you'll see that you're getting 7.
the part that you should care about is where it tells you your overall monthly average. that's the only one that matters, because it's the one calculated from all your fuel and from all your miles.Tazz Thanks this. -
Yeah, generally it's like half-ish. the later part, when it tells you your average for the month, is more accurate. I pushed until I got an answer, and in short, its a problem with the computer program in marshfield when it's asked to do the immediate calculations. As if, on your fuel card, the fuel is being charged twice, then the the message 32 calculates it and sends out your mpg message, and how you suck. then the double-charge is cleared, like, a day later. so everything goes back to normal. The fuel dept. is aware of this, though fleet managers aren't unless the hound the fuel dept. for an answer. Assuming you have a new QC, I've found that the "Performance Monitoring" tab's mpg calculation is more accurate. I believe, that the fuel department isn't interested in fixing it, because they think that particular function is going away "Soon"* so it's not worth the man hours.
* "Soon" is a registered trademark of Roehl Transport and is not to be confused with an actual representation of time, or timeliness as generally thought by reasonable individuals, in this regard, "soon" means: "Well, not now. But we're pretty sure the sun will still be burning when we make a decision." -
That makes sense. And your right, in the performance monitering section it says i'm usually getting 6.5

In at least one of the two PAM trucks I had the qualcomm did not report as many miles as I drove nor how fast fuel was going through. I was doing better than qualcomm reported all the time but still got hounded about fuel mileage.
So I completely dig what the OP is asking. It is qualcomm pure and simple. -
The QC is unreliable anyway for tracking milage....you should go by the miles between fill ups and do some math yourself...I had a qc once tell me I was getting 3s when I was in the 6s....then you get the oddball 20mpg....
The way Roehl computes milage for the month is exactly the way Notez described... -
You could prolly find a Smartphone App to do the calculation for you.
-
I'm telling you I could message PAM or talk to them on the phone and they didn't care what I said but went by the QC to ding me on fuel economy. I pretty much HATED those bastids!

I just wanna point out, the terse responses didn't come from the Roehl drivers in this forum.Vwal528 Thanks this.

The fuel guage in my truck is fine until I get to a half tank and then it goes all screwy showing everything from empty to 3/4 of a tank, so I started tracking it a lot closer manually. Doing it yourself this way gives you a much better sense of where your fuel level stands and warns you if your truck is having an issue. I use a steno book to track my load information and mileage figures so all I do is put the mileage, fuel and pump price in the notebook. The math becomes very easy and if your mpg starts to drop without something to explain it, you know your truck is having an issue. The qcomm gives you a constantly changing snapshot, so it isn't the most reliable.
I'm not anti computer, but learn your truck for yourself and you will know when something is "off" before the computer tells you what the issue is. I knew I had fuel issues even though the truck never told me. I knew because my fuel filters didn't last very long, turned black and my mpg's went down. I started using fuel conditioner religiously and the mpgs have gone up by over .2 of a gallon, fuel filters are lasting longer and I seem to have more power. The point is drive the truck, don't let it drive you.
