Hello all...
i have bought a truck last month and right now it's just sitting so I can work on it and get in to 100% before I get it on the road. Now I am going to work with my friend and be under his authority for now. I plan on getting my truck into service in the end of July or beginning of August. Now I live in Connecticut and have looked up what the cost. Are for plates and its $1550. One of my other friends who also owns a few trucks here in CT told me that I don't have to pay my heavy highway use tax until next year. And after searching on here I got even more confused about this. People say you must pay $550 before you get your plates, some say its pro rated from the time you put your truck into service then the next year you pay in full, some others say you have 30-60 days to pay it after you get your plates. Can anyone on here please give me some insight on what I may have to do.. I'm trying to budget my money to the cost of starting up.

Also I am going to get temp plates for my truck so I can drive it to my friends shop and back home also I'm getting the frame sandblasted so I have to drive it there. What's the minimum insurance I need to get to do this. I know just bobtail but for the liability can it be 25000/50000 or does it still have to be 750,000??

Well, lets see, my memory is a tad fuzzy, but your 2290 is paid on a fiscal year, Jul 1-Jun 30th. Your truck going into service after Aug 1st means it would be prorated for the rest of the fiscal year. Now, when renewal comes up, you have I believe 60 days grace. And I'm pretty sure you'll need to pay the 2290 prior to getting registration.

Check to see if previous owner paid the 2290. It stays with the truck, not the owner, so if they paid it all you need is a copy of the reciept and you're good to go.

Ct Irp unit won't register a truck with apportioned plates without a paid stamped 2290. And a PILE of other paperwork. You'll also need a signed by both parties contract with explicit information regarding you working for whomever has the authority you're operating under. Bobtail physical damage for temp plates-as far as I recall the insurance company will give you the minimums, as you had to pay in for ct's minimum in addition to "uninsured/underinsured motorist" coverage that ct requires.
Plates are about what you're expecting....but change depending on what states you run and how much you run in them. Mine were $1380 something this past year, high $1700s last year: bc I removed a couple states I hadn't been running in.danwantstodrive Thanks this. -
Thanks guys... The previous owner payed it last year and he told me it expires in June or July.

OP, some states will allow initial registration without a 2290, as the IRS gives you 60 days to from the purchase to pay it. Since you are very late in the year, you'll pay a small percentage of the 550. Your local IRS office will figure out your tax and give you a stamped copy for your plates. As far as insurance goes, bobtail insurance can only be bought for a leased on truck. OOIDA has an easy to get policy for what you need.danwantstodrive Thanks this.
