Does anyone know how the Cat C13 engine is? I'm just starting to look at trucks and I found a 2009 Peterbilt 386 with the C13 in it, the price is upper 30's and the truck looks nice with about 665,000 miles on it just wondered about opinions or thoughts.
I would be hauling smooth bore tankers and Reefer units mostly. I would be plated for 80,000 lbs and hauling that pretty much all the time.

Stay away from that engine, or any Caterpillar after 2007. You have been warned.

Especially the fuzzy ones with the wide stripe through the middle

A c13 can do good mpg, but cat engines became HORRIBLE once they put a DPF filter on them. If you don't run cali, do not buy the truck. If you must run cali, then don't do a dpf cat. Get a Detroit, or even a cummins.

No dpf cats.......ever !
search the forum and you will find a ton of threads on these pos engines... -
Pre dpf great motor even know a heavy hauler that runs a c13. Post dpf horrible piece of crap. As much as I love caterpillars I'd never own another cat powered truck post 03. I hate the ACERT c15 we have fuel guzzling pile of crap in my opinion. Runs alright pulls decent but I'm throuroughly disgusted with the fuel milage. The c13 on the other hand was good on fuel would pull pretty well for as small as it is and was a good motor as long as it didn't have a dpf on it. If you don't run Cali as another member posted and can find one pre 08 you could make some money with it. And it didn't have the head gasket problems that the c15s had back in the day.

just saying...
