Used to be if you can run through there after 8pm and before 5am, it's faster to take the GWB. But I haven't been up there since 2014 so I really don't know anymore. Can't imagine much has changed though.
For those who say avoid the area altogether, I say nay nay. I actually liked running through there, although I never had the pleasure of delivering in the Bronx. I was in Brooklyn a few times, and it was a blast until the day I ran a pallet jack over my foot. Had a ton of fertilizer in bags, was pulling it to the back of the trailer and it got away from me a bit. My foot slowed it down though.
The first time I went up there, my father in law, who drove truck in the early 90's, gave me some great advice. He said "there's thousands of other people, just like you, doing the same thing, trying to go somewhere, they're no better or worse than you. Just relax and enjoy the sights, because you WILL see some interesting sights". Boy, was he right.
So when you're going through the Cross Bronx three wide, at 55mph with trucks on either side with mere inches between your mirrors, just sit back and enjoy the three miles or so of what amounts to a carnival ride.. And remember, it won't last forever.

Well, considering this would be my first time running through NYC, I do not believe I'm ready for it yet.

Good decision if you won’t be across the bridge in time.
Just figure out well ahead of time what route you’re planning on taking (south) from 287 into Newark. Then double check, and triple check.
Watch your speed going across the Tap. And take care at the interchanges there off 287 in NJ...dtj12231989 Thanks this. -

But 1st, if you took 95. You will NOT be going thru NYC. as you go over the bridge you would be able to see a small part of NYC from the bridge.
Next just a question have you gone thru Chicago, atlanta, Los Angelo's, Dallas, Houston, Kansas city, hell Jacksonville, yet? All major cities have congestion, traffic jams. Just turn up the tunes, pay attention, get on they then and continue on your way. Most of not all of the horror stories you have heard. Where nothing but stories driver have been repeating over and over since the roads were dirt.kemosabi49 and rbrtwbstr Thank this. -
