I had a gastric bypass July 2012. It was an open surgery and I have a scar from just below the breast line to just below my belly button. I have been studying for my permits and working my regular office job when about a week ago I popped out with a 3 inch hernia on my incision. I will most likely have this repaired in the beginning of October. After my surgeon clears me does anyone know what type of documentation I need to bring with me when I head out to training? I don't want to quit my job only to be sent home for medical.

None that I know of unless you have to take meds for it, I've known a couple who have a incisional hernia.

it is something that isn't a debilitating hernia in itself like in the groin area or in along the belt line which limits one from lifting and can be very painful.

Did your doc tell you what your limitations are with the incisional hernia?

How's the GB working out for you?

Talk to your recruiter, and then follow up with an email to said recruiter. You will have to be off pain meds for sure, and if I remember correctly, at least a month off them. Also you will probably need a letter from your doctor stating your good to go.

The bypass is working well. I'm down over 100 pounds in a year and it is permanent.

The meds will only be while in the hospital and for after a bit. As soon as I can handle being off them I will quit. I have quite a good pain threshold.

Right now it isn't debilitating however what I know of hernias is that they don't stay small. They continue to grow.

Right now my surgeon is only letting me walk for exercise. I saw him today and mentioned I wanted to bowl and I was told no. Nothing heavier than a gal of milk.

I have labs in the morning and see him in 2 weeks to get schedule. Recovery is 6 weeks from what he said and after that increase activity slowly. I want to work in reefer division so i won't have tarping unless I get a flatbed trainer for some reason. I know I will need corrected but about the heaviest activity I imagine would be is lifting the hood, stooping under the truck, sliding tandems load securement, and cleaning out the trailer be it sweeping or a full spray down.

    Am I missing something?

What about putting on tire chains? What area do you plan to operate? If you drive OTR and run all 48 states you may need to "chain up". It usually takes me about an 1.5 to 2 hours to chain my tractor and trailer and then stop again in a few miles to tighten everything up again. Just something to think about...

Your other option is to find a local or regional job that stays in a specific area...

am I to assume your taking a hiatal hernia
which should have been repaired during the original operation
my doctor when I had lap band surgery says 8/10 bypass patients need this done
mine was done at same time as original surgery
I was back working in 10 days off meds in 3
but lap band isn't as intrusive as a full bypass
still you will need doctor clearance to resume activities

    Charlami and baha Thank this.

    Thanks Ben.

Wow chaining. Takes that long. I never realized. I used to live in Oregon and once I went up into the Mount Hood area during the winter and had to chain my car but well they were more cables than chains and not very heavy.

This is what/why I'm learning. LOL. Anyways the plan is for me to go first since the hubby has better earnings currently and for me to do my time and learn all I can. Then bring him on board and team. We have nothing tying us down bit the house. After a couple years we'd like to get our own or lease. That is a very long time from now. I'm thinking 3-5 years at least.

Nope not hiatal although he did fix that while he was in there. Did too good of a job of that one. I was plagued with strictures the first 6 months.

It is a full blown hernia in the abdominal wall. When I am laying flat and contract my muscles to sit up it pops out about 2-3 inches.

My surgery had the luxury of a big fat open incision about 14 cm straight up and down. Anyways it is working. Only 100 more to go. Yay for that. My bmi right now is a 41 I'm aiming for a 34 before I'm ready to go.

Yeah, your gonna have to lift a weighted box from the ground to your waist as part if your company physical.

Failure to do so will get you sent home.... Doesn't matter if you are reefer, tanker or flatbed

Thanks can you tell me the approximate weight of the box and is it has handles like I believe I saw in an online video somewhere.
