Hello I am 52 and looking to change careers. The kids are grown, youngest started college last year. I have been reading everything I can on the forums about starting a career OTR. I will be getting my DOT physical and CDL Permit here in the next couple of weeks.

My question is about where I live. I live in North Central PA in a very rural area. The only cities are an hour north, Corning, NY, or an hour south, Williamsmport, PA. I was looking at Wilson Logistics for CDL Training because of all of the recommendations on this website. Wilson says they hire in all 48 states but do you have to live near a metro area? I saw on one forum where Prime wouldn't hire someone because of where they lived and the inability to get them home. Is that something I should be prepared for? I know I could ask Wilson these questions but thought I would hold off on contacting any companies until I got the Med Card and CDLP so thought I would ask this question here.

Thanks for your help, and for all of you who make this site so valuable to those of us looking to start our CDL careers.

You can live anywhere they hire, and living in a rural area is sometimes easier to find hometime parking. While I was with them (left recently) they would bobtail me home to Brownsville (from Laredo 180ish miles). You won't be paid miles home, but you are paid miles returning to work.

As far as their training, I was a fan since you log miles with a trainer after getting your permit, and more miles after obtaining your license before yoy ever go solo.

Prime will hire about anyone if they agree to sign a lease-purchase agreement.

You should be fine with any of the large training company’s. Living is a rural area isn’t a big deal unless it’s an area their trucks just don’t frequently roll thru.

as for your training, i highly suggest you find a local cdl school or even see if the community college offers an accredited course.

If you attend a company sponsored school, you will learn just enough to pass the state cdl school, then be thrown into a trainers truck. You will also end up signing a one year contract, which effectively means the company owns you for the next year.

By attending a private school that you pay for, you can pick the job you want, and if it doesn’t pan out for any reason you owe nobody anything. You’re free to quit at a moments notice.

Wow, folks back east have a very different idea about what "very rural" means.
You are in a prime hiring area, I doubt you will have any problems.

As I already pointed out, they don't send you to a school. The Wilson training method is essentially what some of us went through with family years ago. I also give Wilson credit for their safety culture, you say it isn't safe they'll back your play. My ONLY gripe was with my experience running out west where they consider I70 west of Denver off limits, but then I've heard other carriers having similar policies now.

Haha, yeah having lived in CO, KS, and UT, I realize the rural I live in today is not the way it was when I was out West.

I like Wilson training program; lots of driving vs. sitting in a classroom watching videos.

Here's another one to check that trains in Missouri.
Not sure if they hire from PA or not, but you can call and ask. I do know this company hires as far west as Nevada and Arizona. Hourly pay while in school, plus meals and lodging.
