Hi guys I am a 31 year old man from the Baltimore area. I am looking to get my B class so I can drive a dump truck, trash truck, or even a coke or bud truck. Problem is every job I see posted for these jobs requires experience.I dont wanna get my class a because its more money and I dont wanna do long haul cause I gotta wife and kids at home. I do have exp driving on the job because I did valet parking for 3 years also I was a mailman for a year but I have no class B exp. My question is should i spend the money to get my class B or is it waste of money trying to get the jobs I want without any exp? I do have a perfect driving record. I am also a cert TIG welder but having lots of trouble finding work in that field. Would I be better off spending my money getting another cert in welding or getting the cdl?
thanks guys
Question about my future

Cant got laid off but thanks for the great advice

Most good driving jobs require experience, and employers aren't going to recgonize your experience since it's non-CDL.

Just my .02, but if you want to drive, go for the class A.
There was a thread on here a maybe two weeks ago (?) about local driving. Actually, it was about ABF freight which is a union company with full benefits and a pension (which is unheard of these days). Anyway, they were saying that if you go to work for them, they will send you to their driving academy and give you a job. Google it or search the forum here.
Also, ltl companies will do something similar if you work on their dock first. Search for that one, too. Pay for those companies is pretty good, too, But ABF is really supposed to be one of the best jobs anywhere.
Dump trucks are ok, but it is seasonal, and I don't think the pay is that great. I did it many years ago, and class A pays better and is steadier, from what I've seen.
Welding is a good occupation. It's up to you what you like. But if you have a clean license and you keep your personal self out of trouble, once you have a little experience you can always get a job. Good luck. -
Thx for the info fld, is the ABF freight job long haul or local?
-
Local. They have local guys that do pickup and delivery during the day, and linehaul guys that run at night. Full union benefits and pension, not 401 k bs.

Cool I am on their website now, are they a moving company? So if I work on the dock they will train me for my class A? I read some reviews on the company and people really like it they just say the management sucks but I guess thats everywhere lol one last question sorry what does linehaul mean kinda new to this stuff.

Lookup ABF freight. They are an ltl (less than truckload) company, not a moving company.
Linehaul drivers move freight from one terminal to another during the night. Then the guys on the dock break those loads down and reload them into trailers for the next day's local deliveries.
