Hey folks, I'm in need of feedback / advice regarding my situation and training.
i recently finished truck driver training school July 31st, it was 8 weeks long at a community college.
i took about a week off to tend to family matters. Last week I started orientation at a company where I live to get my year experience in, orientation was 2.5 days long. I was hired to be otr driver.
They put me with a local route trainer first yet you have to have at least 1 yr experience to drive local for them anyways. So I've been with a trainer, who is honestly a good guy and trainer, I've been with him 2 days drove half the route today. Well today he is sick and says he's taking off tomorrow, the dispatchers found someone to ride with me while I drive his route, I hear him say on the phone oh he knows the route.. Also there's another part of the route I have yet to even see yet.
Anyone have any thoughts on this? I don't even want local.
I'm really not feeling good about tomorrow.
thanks people.

Well you wanted to drive a truck...now you are...make the best of it cause it will never be what you want it to be everyday...good luck.
-
You'll be fine. If your Trainer thinks you know it, then you know it.
Besides, they'll have another knucklehead riding along with you to help you think.
And as far as "not wanting local", may I suggest that when we are starting out, we might not fully grasp what we know and don't know. In other words, you don't even know what you don't know.
(Many drivers would give their left nut to drive local and give up OTR!!) -
True dat, seamallowance.
We don't even know what we don't know.
To the OP, just drive, ride and learn. Let the other genius guide you through the maze of confusion.
There are things we keep to ourselves that we worry about and this is a good example of one of them.
Worry a moment, then move on... -
That's true, I went otr with a friend before school to even see if it's something I'd like.
flatbedding, where this is drop hook dry van, actually I eventually want to flat bed. I also worked oil field a little but never got a cdl so I know I want to travel some. Thanks for the response and encouragement, I know I'm decent for a student driver, I've been around equipment my whole life.
The time frame and wanting to drive safe and being pushed so soon into heavy all day traffic and go go go is intimidating. -
You will do fine! We all tend to worry about the unknown. Just look at it as more drive time and more experience for when you have to navigate by yourself to a shipper or receiver that is in Jersey.
As far as the places you haven't been yet on that route, just plug it into your phone, or the other trainers phone, and you will find it just fine.
Tonythetruckerdude Thanks this. -
If you're worried about a part of the route you haven't seen how in the world do you plan on being an OTR driver? There are going to be a lot of first time destinations when you go OTR! Put on your big boy panties and drive the truck!

Get the GPS going, you might not know the whole route but you should have a list of addresses for all your stops. Put them in the GPS and get r done hoss

I would ask, how long do I have to do this local before going OTR?
That happened to me once; hired on for coast-to-coast and they put me with a trainer doing local. A month later I was still local and the trainers kept telling the terminal manager I need more training. This was pulling hazmat/tankers. Told the terminal manager to cut me loose OTR or I would have to leave the company. He immediately cut me loose from local to OTR.
Ask some questions about what they have in mind and how long local, etc. If they are vague with the answers, then find another job. I wouldn't stay over 90 days because many OTR companies won't count that local driving as experience. -
Relax, listen to the feedback you're given by your trainer(s), work hard, you'll be fine. I was able to go OTR after driving locally, so you can still do OTR after getting some local experience. You will most likely have to go with a mentor or trainer briefly to get some OTR experience with an experienced driver. I did.
