Lots of times during my train for my CDL I hear recruiters informing that people dont like to drive into NEW York or Canada. But for the life of me I dont know why.
Can ya'll tell me why it is that truckers dont like to drive into these places. And what am I to be looking out for going there? Whats the problem with going into New York & Canada??![]()

After spending a few days on here reading some posts I am not sure I want to be driving ANYWHERE in the United States. I am a Canadian and it seems like the US DOT has a lot of stupid restrictions and stuff like that. Sounds like Law Enforcement down there looks for any reason to give you a citation. I am jsut starting out with Schneider and I read a lot of bad things about them too. But on the flip side its all coming from American Drivers. There are a lot of different rules and standards up here so I hope that Schneider treats us differently because of that. Any specific questions about Canada I will be glad to try and help!

Reasons:
World class congestion
Tight turns
rude & ignorant traffic
rude & ignorant people
inability to get accurate directions
World famous crime..many concerns for personal safety
Lotsa tolls..and
A wide spread ban on 53 ft trailers...does your company reimburse overlength fines?
Upstate New York is a different animal. No big deal there.
Canada:
Biggest peeve is arrogant and ignorant U.S. Customs Officials..they had to be abused children.
The everchanging rules concerning documentation.
Now electronic manifests are required to be submitted by your company one hour prior to your crossing. Loaded or empty. Can you trust the efficiency of your company personnell to send timely & accurate information?
The fine for arrivals earlier than one hour or incomplete or erroneous electronic documentation can result in fine of at least $5000. Are you reimbursed for your company's mistakes?
Once into Canada you will find things much like the U.S. Canadian people are very courteous and accomodating. Canadian roads are comparable to the U.S highways. And of course U.S. currencey is accepted everywhere. It's just the border crossings that alienate most drivers. -
I was informed today in orientation that there is only one way I can drive in canada with my DWI's. I must pay $850.00 to the canadian government for what they call a "Queen's Pardon". To which I replied, " I have something for the queen, but it sure ain't $850.00."
As if the paying of $850.00 will make me a "safer" driver. The queen can kiss it where the sun don't shine. If you owe child support, you are a felon in canada and will need a "queen's pardon" The list goes on because what we in the U.S. consider a misdemeanor is considered a felony there.
ps: I'm not condoning any of these offenses, I'm just sayin'...
