I have been trying to figure out how i want to go about this. As of now i have my class A Permit and am about to start my CDL school next week. I am located in the phoenix area and was wondering if i should go this route and try to find a local/regional job or cancel all that and start up with Central Ref. and have to redo my permit and do OTR. I would really prefer to only be away from home a few days max but it seems from doing some research i have no choice. I have 3 moving violations in 3 years and therefore makes it a little more difficult finding jobs. Are there alot of companies in the AZ area that hire local/regional jobs? Or do all of them need experience like i have noticed. I can have my Class A CDL license by next week if i do it at the school by my house. Where do i go after that?

The general rule in trucking is that most drivers would prefer to be home every night, while few prefer the OTR life. Which translates into "paying your dues" for a few years doing less desirable work before getting a chance at the gravy is pretty much how it works everywhere.
Between that and the tickets, I'd guess your only---never mind best---way into trucking is to go OTR with an outfit that's known to give risky (on paper) drivers a chance.
There used to be a whole subculture of such companies (anyone remember Dick Simon?), but they are getting harder to find because of all the computerized record sharing and etc. between states. Some still exist, though. Someone on this board might send you a PM or two.Last edited: Aug 19, 2010
