If a driver has the knowledge and the tools, can he deal with minor malfunctions in the container machinery (filter-driers, loose connectors, etc.) on his own instead of calling a third-party? I suspect the panels are sealed and the answer is no, but I'm still curious.

It's one of them things the shop will tell you no but when you are done dispatch is happier than a pig in mud. I've always fixed bulbs, filters if need be and simple stuff. One time I changed out my fan blower motor because I had no AC coming across the desert. Not a word was said. I just asked for a PO#, turned it in and then got reimbursed.

Stuff I could push until I was empty I would. If it was necessary to go into a shop I would stop and then tell them. You go to asking before hand they'll coerce you to go on. It's usually like Hi, I'm at the TA to get a flat fixed. I need a comcheck and PO#. It goes a lot smoother that way.

The down side is if you make things worse can get you in trouble. Don't work on stuff unless you know what you are doing. It would be hard to explain to workers comp you got hurt working on the truck.
