So here's a question that I've been wondering. On the rand McNally atlas it has routes that are highlighted because they are STAA compliant routes. After doing some research on STAA I've seen that they have standard dimensions for length and width and weight. But I couldn't find anything about height. So here's my question. If a route is highlighted as a STAA route in the atlas. Does that mean that there are no bridges with a height of less than 13'6"?

look up a legal route that you know of -- which also has a low clearance or restricted bridge weight. the orange highlight will be there. Rand doesn't know whether you're 12 ft or 13'6, or if you're 34k ,, or 80k.

STAA = 13'6" tall, 8.5' wide, a 53' trailer, and no limit to the tractor length.

sorry, but STAA does NOT regulate height. from http://ops.fhwa.dot.gov/freight/publications/size_regs_final_rpt/index.htm#cmv

There is no Federal vehicle height requirement for CMVs. Thus, States may set their own height restrictions. Most height limits range from 13 feet, 6 inches (4.11 meters) to 14 feet (4.27 meters), with exceptions granted for lower clearance on particular roads.

The STAA authorized the establishment of a "National Network" for trucks where Federal width and length limits would apply.

I just bought my atlas specifically for height as a backup to the "all stays truck and travel" app that lists low bridges. Kinda sucks to know that the highlighting doesn't mean it's safe to travel height wise.

I challenge you to find 1 STAA route with less than 13'6" clearance.

Buckeye91 did say STAA route, but he also said RM highlighted routes. Are both one and the same?

If so, I do know that OH-183 in alliance, OH is highlighted in the RM. And I've seen countless trucks stuck under a bridge there.

The MCRA also has a section on restrictions such as low clearances.

[h=3]NATIONAL NETWORK[/h]The STAA authorized the establishment of a "National Network" for trucks where Federal width and length limits would apply. It includes the Interstate System and other designated highways which, on June 1, 1991, were a part of the Federal-Aid Primary System in effect at that time. The NN now totals over 321,890 kilometers (km) (200,000 miles) of highways across the Nation. The non-Interstate NN highways are listed in 23 CFR Part 658, appendix A.
