Im from San Antonio,Texas and plan on going to orientation and training in Lancaster,Texas.....I already have my Class A CDL and TX endorsements.I havent drove since I got out of driving school two years ago.I know how to back up trailers because I pulled goosenecks 30 & 40 ft since I was old enough to get a license. The problem is I got rusty because I didnt start driving once I got out of Driving School in Austin,Texas.I havent wrote out a log book in two years but Pre tripping I know alot about. My question is about the road test. Will they be patient with me because I havent been in a tractor trailer for a while? Will they understand and work with you at first until you get the hang of it during the 6 week training or will they just kick you out and send you packing? I did good at my driving school and one of the trainers said i was one of the three best in my class.I still know how to float gears up and downshifting.I look forward to going to school again and Im real excited.Sorry for the long message.
Thank you for any info!![]()

Don't know about the orientation road test. I didn't have to take one as I went to orientation a week after finishing CDL school.
As far as the trainer you get during the six weeks.. That depends. Some are very understanding and patient. Others aren't. You'll find out when you get on their truck. Don't be afraid to contact your Driver Service Manager if you don't feel your mentor is a good fit for you.
The final road test wasn't that hard. It wasn't any different than the road test given by the DMV. When I did it, I had to give a verbal pre-trip. Had to identify every key point that I was supposed to check. Was given 5 minutes to rattle them all off.
Then it was just going out and driving on city streets and some freeway driving. At the end back at the yard, had to do an "alley back" into a parking spot. After that had to do a straight back. That was it.
The written test you have to take is easy. 50 questions on Swift Policy, and General Knowledge. -
I went through SA academy, then home terminal is Lancaster. You will go through 2 and half days of orientation. If you have previous otr experience, you take a road test, some backing etc.. easy enough. If you pass you go with mentor for 2 weeks, if not its 6 weeks. Like Gereke said, if you dont like the way your mentor is treating you, get with driver services and ask for a new one. I stuck with mine till the 40th day and couldnt take him anymore. Alot was going on with this guy, so they went ahead and upgraded me.
Once you finish with the mentor, you take the written test, backin and street driving, which shouldnt be a problem after being on the road for 2-6 weeks. Hope this helps....BigT -
Thanks guys I appreciate the info.Just had some other things to ask tho.In my other driving school they taught me everything i needed to know to get my cdl like letting you practice backing, driving, airbrake test, dps cdl tests, and road test with dps employee. My main question is will swift refresh me on all this and go over this stuff like written test?..... and what happens if you fail one of the tests for them like either written or road test.....how do they react or what is their policy with that? Ive always had a problem with worrying
Thanks for the help! Keep it up

Have you spoke w/recruiter yet? Sometimes they like you to take a refresher course since youve been out so long, and no OTR experience.
You will just have to let your mentor know whats going on, he should take it easy with you the first couple days so you feel comfortable back in the saddle.
Mine handed me the keys said lets go, he was all about getting the miles, thats how they get paid for training, whatever their milage pay is, how many you drive. Except for owner/ops they have a different scale, RugTrucker can tell you more about that. Just remember, if the mentor isnt helping or teaching you, GET another one.....Good Luck...BigT -
thanks sir.....i havent been in a truck for about two years now but i still been pulling around 40ft GNs but that really doesnt help much if you think about it compared to tractor trailers!...Im just going to see how it works out.....I did good in driving school in 2007. Probaly because i grew up on manual trannys and gn flatbeds and different trailers.....That helped out some.At school they had some junky peterbilts with sleepers and detroit diesels so it was easy to shift for me floating up or down.....I know swift uses a lot of volvos on their fleet but I can get used to anything.......Its kind of relieving to know that you can get another mentor if you dont like the one you got?.....Im about to go soon because swift is already doing a background and mvr check....Its all good.....I ready got a medical card but they still want you to take another dot physical/drug test.....Sorry for the long message ...I talk way to much and no do lol....Thanks
