Well for flats in coming out of NE the rates are ####!!!!!! last week was railroad ties 50 mile radius, 38 miles deadhead $200. Scottsbluff run yesterday or the day before 97 miles deadhead, 432 loaded was paying 900 required 8ft drop tarps. Not impressed at all yea the rate isn't too bad if I was in valley/omaha, but if I'm going to break out a 2 120lb tarps to tarp a load going 432 miles I ain't running for 2.08 loaded. To tarp that load I would've needed at least $1200 to pay for my time tarping, and the wear and tear of a 110lb person lugging 120lb drop tarps up on the trailer and then figure out how to get them on the stack...because the loaders refuse to put the tarp up there for you. Rates just aren't looking too good right now you'd be better off getting direct freight in my opinion but that's a whole nother can of worms.

Load boards are usually the last stop for unwanted loads. Cheap and heavy as a general rule, but sometimes you can find good loads. When you do find good paying loads you try to cultivate a relationship with that shipper / broker, and keep going back for more. The more you use the load boards the less you'll need them since you're building a contact list (or should be) to call on.

As far as rates, as everyone else has said: too many variables to quote a rate. Short runs almost always pay more (per mile) than long ones. You can really cash in on regional and local loads.
