Locally, UPS has an opening for a "dedicated" driver I'm thinking about applying for. Here's what I know:

    DESCRIPTION

UPS Freight Truckload is hiring individuals to work as Full-time Dedicated Drivers. This position involves the driving of a tractor-trailer for the over-the-road delivery of freight to two or more locations. Dedicated drivers are primarily assigned to run freight for one customer, and may be assigned to an operation based at a specific customer location. These drivers are normally on the road from one to five days at a time. The term “dedicated” refers to the customer, not a particular lane or destination. Dedicated drivers may be flatbed, van, or both, depending on the requirements of the customer(s) at the driver’s domiciled location.

Dedicated Drivers must pass a DOT physical and successfully pass a UPS Freight road test. Qualified applicants must have a valid unrestricted Class A Commercial Drivers’ License with Haz-Mat endorsement, issued by this state. Dedicated Drivers are expected to comply with all appearance standards.

Applicants must be at least 23 years and 6 months of age. Applicants must be able to read, write and speak the English language. Applicants must also meet the Department of Transportation (DOT) and Company mental and physical requirements; and must be physically and mentally able to safely perform the essential job functions without obvious risk of injury to the employee or co-workers. Applicants must receive satisfactory results from a background check, as conducted in accordance with applicable laws; and must pass a drug screening.

    And from www.mahalo.com:
"The average salary for a US UPS driver is in the 70K range with full benefits and a generous retirement program."

So what else can you fine ladies and gents tell me about being a dedicated driver for UPS? Good job or run like the wind away from it? Home every night or out for up to 5 days at a time (in red above)? What kind of truck can I expect to get? My own truck or some communal piece of junk that stinks like 6 day old #####? Sleeper or non-sleeper? Etc...

I'm not expecting this to be a top rung job (if it was, I'm sure more senior drivers would suck it up) but any info you have would be welcome. Thanks.

The salary and benefits quoted would be for a UPS parcel or freight driver.
Truckload is a part of UPS Freight, but it does not pay Freight (LTL) wages/bennies.
You would be looking at standard truckload wages of around .38 cpm or so...depending on your experience.
Maybe some stop pay at about $10.00/stop or so excluding the final destination.
They would probably get you home most weekends or at least a couple days during the week for a 34-hour restart, as well.
I know they have the Harley Davidson account and Advance Auto Parts.
The equipment I've seen on the Harley account running across I-76 on the Penn Turnpike is pretty good. All sleepers and 53' trailers with Harley graphics on them.
I've seen liftgates for the guys on Advance Auto....may be some hand-bombs involved there.

Thanks, Paddington. Doesn't sound any better than Websters Trucking. At least at Websters you were home every night (or day if you had night runs).

    How 'bout union or non-union?

UPS Dedicated Truckload is non-union. UPS put all thier non-union truck load divisions under one name several years ago(anyone remember WDS?)

    Paddington,
The HD tractors you are the old HD private fleet. UPS just put thier name on the door. They are nice looking trucks though.
