Hello -- Just wanted to touch base with someone ( Trucker or Truckers significant other ) that might give me some insight about a cpl of things -- My Hubby was employed by a private waste management company out of Richmond, Va., from 1991 - 2003. He held a Class B from 1994 - 2006. He operated single body trucks there with a HAZMAT endorsement. He left that company enlisting in the US Army Active Duty. He completed a PVOC Operating Course as a Dual MOS at Fort Leonardwood, Missouri driving Class A equivalent bodied trucks and trailers. Upon completion of his MOS training at Fort Lee, Virginia as a Petroleum Supply Specialist (MOS - 92 F) he was assigned to Fort Hood, Texas. There He was assigned to an Aviation Unit and for the next 7 years He drove single bodied Hemmitt Fuel Trucks. He transported JP-8 Fuel and also drove Tankers to and from the FARP (Forward Arming Refueling Point) While in the US Army He held a Class A Military License with a HAZMAT endorsement as well and was certified annually for transporting Fuel and as a Fuel handler refueling AH-64, UH-60, and CH-47 Helicopter Aircraft both hot fueling /cold fueling. These certifications and qualifications were valid from 2003 - March 2011 -- He got out of the Military, returned home to Virginia -- let everything expire -- Went to work for the Commonwealth of Virginia for the Department of Corrections as a Correctional Officer -- Has been employed there since June 2011 -- really is NOT thrilled about the position or this type of work. He misses working outside in the element and driving, so He begins a CDL school part-time while still working for the State -- He is more than halfway through and He is to finish the weekend of March 31st -- so still a considerable amount of time left (He only attends 4 days a month)--

He currently has his Class B License, Class A Learners Permit, TWIC Card, HAZMAT endorsement. He has applied with TMC and Roehl both and recieved a condition letter of acceptance for employment -- The reason for applying with these particular companies is the Training process, good word of mouth from others and also because they participate in the Post/911 GI Bill OJT Apprenticeship Training that would allow him the addition income while in training up to 18 months.

Our questions come from not knowing very much about this industry and want to acquire some insight --First and foremost He wants to be in a field working as a Tanker or HAZMAT Industry -- This is why He went ahead and paid the $ 130 to get the TWIC card. We are willing as his family and support system to relocate ANYWHERE that might be necessary to give him the best ratio aspect of finding a position with a company. The situation comes right down to this -- He has no OTR experience driving other than Military and did not even in the Military acquire road miles that were anything like OTR -- But his passion is being a Tanker -- operating Fuel trucks or hauling Crude Oil and that is what He wants -- Returning to Texas would be idea for him as He loved Fort Hood. I guess simply put, are there any companies that Hire basically new drivers (because even with his CDL training in the Military is cannot be counted) working in the industry as Fueler, Tanker, Crude Oil Hauler or in this industry in general -- Any help or direction in this matter, recommendations, or words of wisdom would be so greatly appreciated --

first thank you and your husband so much for his service. i cant help with specific info but i can say this... look for tanker companies, or if they say no then bigger companies with tanker division (schneider has one). while you are sort of correct about the whole experience thing, there may be companies that would consider hiring him based on the fact that he really does have experience..once he graduates the school of course. only thing to do is to apply to those companies that interest him...worst that can happen is they say not til he has more experience. but dont just assume that his experience will be ignored by all potential employers. give a few good ones that you find a try... if they say no he can always work for one of the mills for 6 months to a year, and try again for the companies he really wants.

No problem, especially being a military veteran trucker. For a guy like your husband, many companies will waive the experience required rule. On the applications or pre-hire, note you are willing to relocate. The websites will show where the terminals are located. Includse a resume of his military driving experience. Here's a list of good companies:

    Foodliner ( 3 tanker divsions)trans-system (tanker/reefer/flatbed)
    Miller Transporters
    Thyssenkrupp Steel-(tanker & flatbed)
    Tankstar
    A&R Transport
    Quality Distribution
    Indian River Transport
    CTLtransportation
    Tribe Transport (tanker division)
    Bulkmatic
    Superior-Carriers
    Pyles Transport - Nashville, TN
    Groendyke

Thank you so very much for your response Pokerhound67 -- This information you have shared seems promising and I have been reading on the Schneider site and they do offer the OJT apprenticeship and have several tanker positions for newly graduated individuals -- I am going to give the Recruiting dept., and contact the military programs department on Monday morning and speak to their Military specialist --
Thank you again and Stay Safe always !!

glad it was some help. please be advised i have no personal experience with schneider, i just happened to know they have tankers. i think your husband can PROBABLY do better than a starter company like schneider, given his military experience. perhaps im wrong, but id START with companies that require experience, and only go to companies like schneider if at least a few of the better paying, experience required, companies had already turned him down.

I am very impressed with the wealth of information you supplied, also the detail and level of experience your husband currently has in transportation with hazardous materials, and flammables, in conjunction with his needed endorsements. My experience and majority of twenty years in a tanker truck, nine of which was delivering Chevron fuels to gas stations. Local work and home every night. However, I would have to drive an average of 5, 6 or 8 hours a day, depending on which refinery or pipeline terminal in California we would load at. Your in Virginia, so I'm not privy to the refinery availability in the eastern states. Generally speaking gasoline and diesel products are more centralized in certain locales for optimal on time deliveries. Over the road tanker jobs are plentiful if he chose that path. His experience with flammables, coupled with his endorsments and tsa clearances. His actual driving experience, or lack thereof will be a minor speed bump, as long as his driving record in good rating. I thank your husband for his service, and your sacrifice as well. God Bless

Start looking at companys that haul fuel to your local gas stations. Almost all them these days are contracted trucking companys to oil companys. He should have no problem getting on with one.

Even with a class B he could run a wet hose truck fueling job site equipment and local trucking companys trucks.

I'll 2nd the THANKS ON YOUR SERVICE......If you want , you can research tanker companies in Greensboro, NC, there is a huge tank farm facility there that is just off interstate 40. close to the airport. Not sure where you are in Va. but NC is a great place to live and the Greensboro triad area is one of the nicest areas I know of . Good Luck!

If you all want to move back to Texas, there are plenty of oil field driving jobs available. You can see many of them pulling tankers. I can't give you specific company names, but you could probably check the Texas State Employment office and they would probably be able to direct you. Most states have all their job postings listed on line. If you can't access it from your own computer, you might have your husband find a local state employment office and find the Texas State Employment Office jobs. I seem to recall that Schneider was doing some tanker work out of Texas. Good luck.
