I have a family and hate being away from my wife and kids. I am w a really great company called RE west and they are awesome. Their OTR is out for 7-10 days and home for 2-3 and from what I have read and seen that's pretty good. But I have been with them since 7/5/2014. I drive trucks in the army for 4 years but eventually I would like to be home and be local. I live in Cleveland TN. But I didn't know if I should just stay where I am at or if a local company would be interested in me? Don't know of the options I have and know there a lot if experienced people out here and just need some advice on a positive route to take. Have a blessed day everyone and look forward to hearing some feed back. I am Jeff by the way
Question and may be a stupid one

Go to Monster.com and subscribe for "driver job alerts." I did that and got a local job making over $63,000 a year, home every night, and two days off a week.
Snowshoes Thanks this. -
Jeff, When I first started driving, I worked for Crete for about 7 months or so, then I got a local job here in Utah, for a company called Nicholas and Company foods, they are like US Foods, it was LTL and home every night, allot of physical labor running up and down the ramp, but it was a decent job.
And of course, the old Army adage, "the only stupid question is the one not asked"
Good luck to you, and thank you for your service My Brother! -
There are no stupid questions!
I know exactly what you're dealing with in terms of family time.
Trucking hours are hard on families.
Start looking everywhere for something that works better with your family situation and you're bound to find it.
Being gone like that isn't easy on anybody, driver, kids, or mom.
Stay positive and look for a different arrangement.
If anyone asks, tell them the truth about why you're on the hunt for something better for you.
OTR just doesn't work for everybody all the time and your better owners and companies understand that. -
yea I think i am going to stick it out for about 6 months and then start looking for local work. My wife supports me 100% and I am thNkful for that. But getting a local job will pay off in the end and during that time, I wil get my experience and thanks for ur reply

OTR will work for now. Until I et a little experience but in the long run, my goal is to be local and it will happen. I had a couple of offers but me and my wife decided until we get financially stable, just to dot he OTR deal and then come local. Make good money for now and then come local and be normal lol

Hi RR, I too wish to thank you for your service. It seems, it's the one thing you can count on to come back to you positively. Companies, I've found, will cater to a veteran before they consider anyone else. It literally has that much credibility. It's extremely tough to look for a job while you are trucking, especially OTR. I suggest having the Mrs. keep an eye out for you. You are in a great part of the country for local work. A lot of freight moves through the central part of the country. Maybe some of the parcel companies, Con-Way, for example. You may have to pull doubles, but you'll be home everyday. Good luck, and keep the shiny side up. :smt023
Snowshoes and AppalachianTrucker Thank this. -
Well said Semi very well said
"semi" retired Thanks this. -
There's always companies out there.. you just have to look and LOOK hard. Also, what I see most mistakes from drivers that look for local.. to most truckers, local means being within a 100 mile radius. Most HR Recruiters get turned off when a driver wants local. Look for "Regional but home 100% every night". It's out there, just need to ask.

Many OTR drivers want to drive only so if you are willing to lift heavy boxes and take two wheelers down ramps fully loaded you don't have as much competition for those jobs as you may think. Many OTR drivers find work where they drive mostly in the daylight so if you are willing to start and end work in the dark in December and sleep in the day light again there may not be as much competition for that job as you think.
