IMHO,,,YES!
Note,,,do not use a die-grinder or saw to cut those filters yourself! Shavings will be all over the element. Ya need a can-opener like a large pipe-cutter.
Pour the oil out of the filters and put em in a plastic bag. Take them to a dealership and tell em what you want to do. They will absolutely understand.
I remember the cutter had a CAT p/n on it so CAT would be where to go if others don't have this but I'd be surprised if they don't.
Good luck!
Question for all my O/O's educated in mechanics.

Update everyone. i went to this guys shop and told him i wanted to look at the oil filter and see how much metal particles where in there. he agreed, took both out while trying not to spill the oil in them. i asked for a magnet telescope and i droped it in the middle of filter where the oil is coming out filtered already. i got nothing. so we grabed a bucket and poured the oil from the filter in there and then i checked again and this time YES, metal particles, but im guessing this was oil coming from the unfiltered part of the filter (the outer area). so kind of wasnt worried about it. i then took filters home with me and opened both up. one was completly clean the other had metal particles between the fins.
So now i am just going to do an oil change and filters, and be done with it. and i will keep taking oil samples and supervising the oil for metals.
I really think this guy was trying to get some extra labor out of me. or an extra $1000 dollars in his pocket. i didnt tell him anything, i just let it be, he seemed kind of bumbed about me not wanting to go foward with the whole bell housing drop.
I even went to freighiner here in houston to the service department and asked the samething i asked ya'll and i was amazed on how similar they're answers where compared to yall's. i just want to say thank you to each one of u guys who helped me out with this issue. You guys just saved me from spending unnecessary money. So thanks every one for the feedback. i'll update in a couple more weeks to let yall know how its been acting.
PS. Any other recommendations??? -
I would be more concerned about the condition of the oil pump since it pumped all the garbage that the filter caught.
Wash it out good and do a quick oil change then analyze oil to see if more work is needed. -
I'd be proactive and just replace the oil pump.
Cheap insurance since it's openRockinChair Thanks this. -

I know this is old Post, but others, like myself may be just reading for first time. Cummins, in old repair manuals actually advised you to mix oil and fuel run at idle for like 20 minutes if I remember right , just to clean, I did this many years ago, seems like it lost slight pressure afterwards but never had a problem with that old truck, also could you possibly have an old cat with brakesaver, only reason I could see to move toward bellhousing
