I preselect always. The Eaton Fuller Roadranger has a preselection valve, that prevents the range shift from happening, until the stick is brought to neutral.
Do you hear any grinding? I'm gonna have to say that the syncronizer for the range shift isn't working right.
I'm a little confused on the clunk sound. Does it sound similiar when you are not moving and cycle the range shift lever in neutral? You should be able to hear the range shifting when doing this.jakers Thanks this. -

The 13 spd Roadranger is basically a 9 spd that you can split the top 4 gears in. 1st gear was considered a granny gear that was only used for starting on a hill when loaded. I shifted it this way, starting in 2nd gear; 2-3-4-5-, preselect the range button to high, making sure the splitter is in low, then shift to 6L, preselect 6H and when you are ready to shift let off the gas and it should shift automatically. On the next shift to 7L do not preselect. Move the stick to 7th gear and just a split second before you get back on the gas move the splitter to low then hit the gas. Progressively go thru the rest of the gears like that untill you're "in the big hole" as we used to say. For downshifting, starting in 9H{or 13th, they are the same}; preselect low on the splitter and let off the gas and quickly get back on it. To go from 9L to 8H do not preselect. Move the stick to 8th gear and just before getting back on the gas move the splitter to H and then get on the gas. Progressively downshift the rest of the gears like that untill you are ready to go to the low side of the transmission, then from 6L depress the range button and go to 5th gear.
Basic rule when upshifting, preselect the H on the splitter, don't preselect the L. When down shifting preselect the L and don't preselect the H.
If you are hearing the clunk all the time when you are shifting there may be an internal problem with the transmission. -
syncronizers are shot! but after that loud clunk and should be a grinding too you should be able to get 4th gear, or try for third gear if you slowing down fast

yea i think its the syncronizers, i drove another 13speed today for a buddy and it shifted perfectly

Look on YouTube, there's a training video there for that transmission. Someone probably wore out the splitter synchronizer by shifting incorrectly.
