I'm a female and will be finishing my cdl school in a couple of week. I'm worried about the physical "strength" tests in orientation. Can you tell me what you had to do and how much weight? I can drive a truck...just finding it shocking that these companies want to test us this way and there is not a whole lot of talk about it. Almost seems secretive. Did you find it difficult. I can struggle with 60lbs to my shoulder. I can't imagine 75lbs.
Thanks for any help and insight you can give!

I went thru school at Stevens Transport in Dallas, and I don't remember any 'strength' tests. We just had to be able to physically get in and out of truck and trailer, plus 'move around under truck and trailer fot pre-, post-trips.
-
The 2 companies I worked at didn't require them either. I think it's normally only important to the LTL companies.

shoot,I couldn't pass some of those tests.lol. really.
that's why I drive a truck. don't have to work and now I'm old and fat. -
Alot seem for flat beds to make sure you can tarp. What kind of trailer do you plan on pulling?

Dry van. I'm looking at Crete. Schneider, H.O. Wolding. All have these tests and all dry van.

I recently turned 56 on 10/1/2012. I am currently trying to get myself into better physical condition to be able to drive a truck in the future. I currently do NOT have a CDL license to drive. I will have to go to a school to learn.
I have been a weak person my whole life. The average man, along with the average woman, can physically oudo me as far as strength, speed, and endurance are concerned. I am really trying to correct all this, along with cleaning up my MVR record and getting a decent employment history in order.
If I am able to acquire the the strength to take the strength test, ANYBODY can do it.
If you live in the hiring areas, you may want to contact Tysons Foods out of Springdale Arkansas. They haul beef, chicken, pork, and other frozen foods all throughout the 48 states. If I am correct, I believe their weight reuirement is 50 lbs.. You may want to check it out. From what I have heard and read about Tyson Foods, they treat their drivers very well. Also, Tyson Foods has certain designated truck driving schools that they will take CSL graduate students from for their fleet.
Good luck luck to you "Crazw"!

I was at Schneider for a very short time, but didn't find the test too difficult. They want to make sure you can pull the release arms for the fifth wheel and tandems, put the landing gear up and down, and get in and out of the truck without going over your target heart rate, which is based on your age. If you can lift the 60 lbs the 30 ft, you should do fine on the other tests...you get to rest in between each station. You can see what the tests are on Schneider's website. Good luck!

OP, I wouldn't worry too much about it. My GF hasn't had any issues, and she's pulled reefer, dry van, and flatbed. I've met some of her students, too. She's had one or two that looked as if they'd have trouble heaving a pillow into the cab, but they've all got jobs.
