Hello, new guy here. I have had my cdl since 2000, but I had to quit after 6 months due to a premature daughter, I had to quit because my employer would not give me time off since he was on the road when all of his kids were born, so I chose my family. I have been behind a desk ever since doing computer work. Lost my job about a month ago, and now I feel the time is right to start driving again. Can anyone offer me some tips on where I could apply with no recent exp. I have do driving violations or convictions of any kind. Plus I don't have much cash to pay for school all over again. Help needed. Thanks
    Greg

With 0 experience it's going to be tough to find a decent driving job that pays well. Especially if you're looking to be home often.

I would give Schneider a call and see what they have to offer. You can also swing by a truck stop and pick up a job booklet. They usually have them in the foyer when you first walk through the door. They are little booklets that list jobs in them. I forget all the names of them....RPM is one I think. Truckers News, also located in the same area in a truck stop, will also have job listings in the back.

Prime is also worth a call. They are still taking trainees and getting them their CDL. Warning about those booklets. EVERY company advertises the best home time, the "best pay package in the industry", best this and best that. Recruiters are recruiters and are paid to get as many butts in seats at orientations as they can. As you search, stay plugged in to this forum, follow the threads, and ask questions. Here you have a rich resource of experience. You just need to learn to "chew on the meat and spit out the bones" - all the BS by the whiners who would never be happy anywhere.

Schneider is currently only taking experienced drivers. They don't take newbies any longer. They have even shut down their schools.

If you had driven for a couple of years and then quit for several, Crete Carrier out of Lincoln, NE may have been interested. I don’t know if six months would be enough to interest them. Call them and check with them. Drivers that drive for several years then take a couple of years off will go out with a trainer. It is a tough market out there now for drivers and what would have interested them 2 years ago may be of no interest today.
