I have a general question for owner-operators, especially since I am assuming a good majority of you guys have worked for other carriers.

When it comes to quoting new business, what does your rating process look like? Are you including all your expenses/overheard every time? Are you simply using a market rater like the DAT?

And better yet, if you have ever been involved with major carriers, how are they going about handling contracted rates/spot rates? Do they have software that generates those rates or is there a large part of the process that still has a human element to it?

Basically, have you seen automated rates in ANY environment or is it usually more hands on?

I know a driver in a large fleet probably does not get the luxury of seeing how the quoting process works, but as owner-operators, I know most of you have a thorough process in determining whether a piece of business si profitable. I want to know how finite your process is, and how detailed you get with it.

An app won’t work: too many variables.

Disclaimer- I dont fit your title criteria, company schlub in an unusual circumstance..

but i have submitted rate offers on dedicated stuff. The other team doesnt say a word, its a poker tournament and they keep their hand quiet. I got an email PDF to fill out on what we'd charge for each run and send it back. You hear somethin or you dont. We did not and im fine with that.

I calculated that we wanted to try for $2.25 all miles base to base for front hauls [we are 300 miles away from them] or from our last fronthaul drop, to base. The routes that fit our puzzle well were a bit lower. The ones that didnt fit at all were higher. The ones that would be misery just priced em stupid.

If you arent a mega you dont want to be getting jobs based on how cheap youll do it anyway. In a year when a few hundred less trucks are on the lane and rates are different.. They might go through that folder and give a call. You can always lower your bid.. But raising it later is bad form.
