[h=2]Question from a Newbie![/h]Well Hi everyone, passed my ACZ 3 weeks ago and have been trying to get a good comparison of all the companies that actually do hire fresh drivers! From what I see Challenger and Schneider are the main two, then I look at their terminals Toronto area or Quebec, 406 km to Toronto area from here only 210 km to Quebec terminals, I have just applied fro my FAST card but I qould still prefer at this point to drive Intra Canada .
I guess what I am asking is
1.Are there more companies that hire straight from driving schools?
2.Is there a likelihood if I sign on fro Quebec I could be assigned to Toronto as I live in Ontario.
3.How much of a problem is it on initial hire if I limit myself to Intra.
Oh and by the way as I am writing this I just noticed Celadon Trucking , do they have a terminal in Quebec and do they take on newbies?
Well I think iv'e asked enough today and im glad I found this forum.

With no experience you kinda gotta take what you can get .. if you tell them you only want to do Canada they will probably look down on that. Get at least a year under your belt then your options as to where to work open up more.

Apply as many companies as you can, send your resume everyone, after interview they may not hire you, so you need many appointments.

Currently I'm still in training, but will be done in a month. I'm taking enhanced flatbed training and have already got about five job offer for when I finish school. You might want to check with SGT they are out of Quebec and are trying to recruit students from my school. They have terminals in Toronto and Sarnia as well as others. Seems like the companies are starting to bend their rules some due to the lack of new drivers. Good luck and ask them lots of questions before you make a decision.

WERNER is another one, Celadon doesn't hire newbies. I agree apply to as many as you can and let them decide

Well I met with the recruiter from SGT, wasn't to thrilled to hear they only pay .17 mile for the first four weeks while out with a driver trainer. After that you get (up to) .32 mile for the next three months then (up to) .35 after that. I don't expect to make loads of money in my first year but I would like to not go bankrupt. After listening to the recruiter's sales pitch I wasn't really impressed. All trips are usually four weeks out or more depending on your trainer.

Thanks for the info there, I've contacted E R B today out of Ottawa so hoping for a test drive soon.I contacted Challenger a few weeks ago and after your test drive they want you to do 3 weeks training and all accommodation costs are covered BY THE Trainee, 250 km from home, then after the same sort of deal with S G T, sorry cant do it.

Man i'm sorry to say but companies wont pay you anything decent while your training with them basicly enough so yo can keep yourself fed wile on the road with the trainer, and the .32 - .35 right off the bat is about right for no experience i'v heard of lower then that for just starting. Were all out here to make money but experience is key take the first decent job you can find to gain some experience work your butt off go everywhere dont turn down loads become good friends with your HR lady/man so in 6-8 months you can start the hunt for a better job closer to home better pay whatever the case maybe and since your friends with the HR people they will give you good reference to help you out in the future....
One thing to keep an eye on is even though your a company driver pay per mile isn't always everything you have to look at the whole package. me personally i'll take a couple cents lower to have newer well looked after equipment then old beaters or a company that pays every pick and drop over a company thats a couple cents higher but does first and last free i can bump more docks then i can run miles to make the difference so your paid more in the long run, look at waiting time layovers health benefits what they cover what kinda bonus's they offer. -
Oh ya i'd hold off on the fast card some companies will pay for it for you saving you some money i'd jsut get your passport to start and you never know you may never need it i'v had my fast for 5 years and used it once maybe twice
