I have a couple questions for all you vets and rookies out there. I've been reading on these forums for a couple days straight and it seems like some of the companies (us xpress lol) I was thinking about going to when I'm done with school aren't looking so good based on the reviews lol. I'm in richmond va and wondering if anyone knows any decent regional or local jobs in the area to start with that won't completely screw me money wise (like making 300 a week and sitting for days with no load) or take a crap on my dac report for next to nothing? I understand you have to put your time and get experience to get one of the good jobs but I'm just trying to make a living enough to survive. Also my situation is that I have a misdemeanor from 2008 and one in 2005 or 2006. I've been told the misdemeanors aren't a big deal but the more I read experiences from vets and rookies alike the more I worry about everything having to do with the decision to get into trucking. Let's not even talk about the dreaded hair test... Any help is GREATLY appreciated, I guess my last question is it worth it to get into this industry to you guys if you had it do again at this point in time. Thanks in advance guys

Werner now does hair follicle!
Yes, it's worth it to get into this industry. It's a great career.
The misdemeanors won't hurt you. Even if they were last week, plenty of companies will hire you.
I highly recommend Abilene Motor Express right there in Richmond. They hire new cdl grads and have an excellent reputation with drivers. @MidWest_MacDaddy can answer your questions.
Abilene would be good also in that they can work on your truck while you're on hometime if the truck needs any repairs or preventive maintenance. -
There's other companies with more regional routes, but I still think Abilene is better:
All these hire new cdl grads.
Averitt Express
Schneider
ABF Freight
JRayL Transport
If it were me the top choices would be these because I don't like those short regional routes:
Abilene Motor Express
Magnum Ltd.
Freymiller
Tyson Foods
Submit several applications and see which companies offer a job. Do it now; don't wait until graduation. -

Personally, I wouldn't work for Averitt, ABF or JRayL. The only reason I listed them is because you asked for companies with regional/local runs. Yep, Schneider does hair follicle; the tanker division does for sure.
MidWest_MacDaddy can fill you in on Abilene. I think it's urine test, but let him tell you for sure.
Abilene is 100% driver no-touch freight. I believe Freymiller is also.
Magnum is a good outfit - @ncmickeyDanch and Rocknroller4 Thank this. -
Hello,
First, I would seriously take a good long look at any company listed by @Chinatown ... I too was looking at USX when I can here and opted to go another direction when he gave me a few non Megas to check into. That and the group of Abilene Drivers that I talked with here on TTR confirmed that I wanted to apply with Abilene. So, please look at every company that he listed as you too may find a perfect fit for you too.
Second, I would be very happy to answer any and all of your questions if you are interested in checking out Abilene. They have both local drivers in Richmond and Regional Drivers for our NE Region too. And as mentioned above you would get a fair amount of unofficial home time because you live in the Richmond area and can just run home between loads when you return to the yard.
To summarize Abilene, good trucks, great freight, and lots of miles. And as a bonus, it's right in your backyard too.
Stay Safe wherever you land!!!
MDDanch Thanks this. -
Thank you kind sir I'll be inboxing you in just a sec. Much appreciated. I'm very interested in Abilene after hearing both of your comments. Matter of fact how do I inbox you on here I didn't see anywhere to send a direct message?

Abilene sounds great. The other companies I was looking at too were Estes and Epes (lol they rhyme) but yea. I'd be interested in hearing any opinions on those too because I know Estes has a terminal here on commerce i see there trucks alot around the area.
