Just about to finish up with school. I have been lucky enough to be hired onto some companies once I complete schooling. Some of the companies I'm looking at for my first job into trucking are CR England USX J&R Schugel and Stevens. After doing research on this website by searching and reading all over about companies I limited down my options to Stevens, J&R Schugel and USX. Now, I called yesterday to USX and I didn't like the way they would have me "Teaming" up for 3-6 months before being able to run solo. So I took them off my list. My two top choices are J&R Schugel and Stevens. Can you guys give me some insight and opinions on who I should take. J&R is $400 a week for 4 weeks of training and then I start at .27 Cents per mile for 6 Months. If all goes well I get bumped to .36 after the 6 months comes up. Stevens Is .27 for the first year and then bumps to .30-.31 after one year. And they have a 8 week training period.![]()

Not that much difference; both reefer companies. If one has APU's then go with that one. At least with an APU you can be comfortable when sleeping or on breaks & can use your computer, TV, etc. without running the trucks batteries down. Either way, after one year, a whole new world will open up for your choice of jobs; so may as well be comfortable during that year.
Melton Truck Lines also has APU's and hires new CDL grads. It's flatbed; check the website. -
Thanks for the post! I know Schugel has 100% APU in all trucks.
Chinatown Thanks this. -

I know J&R Shugel is local to me. But dang, those are slave wage rates for pay on all of them. They have mostly cascadia's from what I see of their trucks around the area.
Seems there website doesn't match what you are describing though.

Im in school myself. We had Stevens come in. Havent heard of the other one. I am going with another refer company instead of stevens because of the rider policy. I am impressed with Stevens always rotating equipment out. All truck are ran till warranty expires. Hometime is about 3 to 4 weeks before you get home. They pay actual miles not rand mcnally miles. Hope this helps.

Stevens just came into my school. Their CPM is lackluster, but this company seems to be a good example of keeping other things in mind. Fuel bonus for example. Great equipment. They pay for the truck to be washed weekly (they got pretty new black trucks for you). They pay you 50 bucks if you stop into a CDL school and let the kids look at your pretty new truck. You can use the Qualcolms WiFi (internet OTR isn't cheap). I haven't talked to any stevens driver's but they advertise that they average their drivers at 3K miles a week, but also that their average load length is 1500 to 1600 miles. Seems like a nice perk to me.
There's a lot of research to be done, don't rush too much, you might end up paying for it later. -
three words for Stevens. New York City.
cuzzin it Thanks this. -
NYC needs freight too. They pay you extra to go in there. Is their percentage of loads that go there that much higher than normal? I'm in Upstate NY. Anything I get will probably have me in NYC a couple times, just gotta accept that. Companies go to NYC, it's not unusual for any company that delivers to the North East
