Question from a wannabe: Can someone be a OTR without being mechanically inclined?

    How? How can you tell that your slack adjusters' adjustment is within DOT specs? How can you tell if your brake linings are in spec?
    What about the jaws on the 5th wheel?

    I wouldn't worry to much about being "mechanicly inclined" For the most part you will learn as you go. In my experience it has been learning from my mistakes. Us truck school era drivers are all taught to look at this and wiggle that to pass the test, But when you are sitting on the side of I40 with a thrown belt, or blown hose. or any number of "little things" in 120 degree heat. you learn quickly to show a little more attension to those things in the future. As many have previously posted, you should learn some basics. changing lights, fuses, maintaining tire pressure and fluids. But you dont have to be a mechanic.. I've learned from this forum that there are alot of good drivers includeing myself that if simply asked will take the time to show you. Good luck out there, Be safe........
