Yeah but a 500 mile radius is useless for OTR.
I was hoping to get everything covered for less than $500mo. So much for that!

I am looking for another insurance plan myself. I contacted OOIDA as well as another I haven't heard back from yet.
But remember, as mentioned, cargo insurance doesn't cover everything hauled, as we have found out recently. We are currently with Progressive and they have been very good, but although we have cargo insurance with them we found out they don't have reefer coverage (yet). We didn't know there was any difference. We figured if you have cargo insurance, you were covered for anything you hauled. So now we're stuck not being able to haul cold stuff until I can get extra coverage for it, and will have to come up with a down payment as well.
And they don't cover you past a 500 mile radius (although you can travel 4x per yr on long hauls at any distance and still be covered, as long as you let them know each trip).
But the prices quoted in the previous post sound about what we've been paying, too.
There is a company that I spoke with last year and am now waiting to hear back from right now, and they have no middleman you have to deal with. They are "National Independent Truckers" at directruckinsurance and I'll paste below what they quoted me for last year (not sure if this year's rates are the same). I don't know if that covers reefers or not, have to find out Monday if I don't get a call before then:
Primary Liability $1,000,000 CSL
Motor Truck Cargo $100,000 Limit
"The total, including taxes and fees, for the above coverage comes to $ 6975for the year which requires a down payment of $ 1750 and nine monthly payments of about $580.55 . This quote assumes a favorable driving record and clean loss history."Last edited: Jan 17, 2009

if you get insurance thru ooida you will not be able to do landstar loads because of the lawsuit a few years ago

Oops, I made a mistake in my mileage quote. Progressive will insure you (costs a little more) for a 500 or 800 mile radius.
I changed to them last year because my previous ins company wouldn't insure a driver with less than 2 yrs on record and Progressive would. -
i'm starting an LLC with 2 units. dry vans to start. hauling dry freight. obviously i need to insure the 2 tractors and trailers and $100,000 in cargo. what else do i need? i hear a lot of different things. and what should i expect to pay? i know there is workers comp, physical damage, bonds, etc. to consider. i'm hoping a pro can school me on this?

- Liability Insurance: Obtain liability insurance. Federal regulations require all for-hire carriers to have liability insurance. The minimum coverage is $750,000, if you do not haul hazardous materials. Hazmat carriers must have $1 million to $5 million minimum coverage, depending on what they haul. In addition, common carriers need a minimum of $5,000 in cargo insurance. Your insurance company or agent must send the needed forms to FMCSA. They must be submitted within 90 days of application.
- Legal Process Agent: You need a legal process agent for each state in which you operate. If there are legal proceedings against you, the legal process agent is the person who will officially receive any papers served. Your insurance company may provide this service to you. If not, companies that offer compliance services are also legal process agents.

Am I to understand that you guys are buying the 500 (or 800) mile radius insurance and still driving OTR?
Were any solutions found for inexperienced O/O's who fell into or purchased a truck? -
We haven't used up the 4 times allowed by Progressive yet because we just started on the road again. If by the time we've used the 4 allowed, and decided to continue, we'd have to find another insurance company.
At least this will give us extra time to make more money that can be used toward a down payment.
Right now we can't afford reefer insurance (Progressive doesn't cover it anyway), so we have to find van loads that will take a reefer.
2 weekends ago my husband hauled corn from IL to Florida. I couldn't find him a load coming out of there, so he deadheaded back. Then last weekend he hauled another load down there and all week I still couldn't find him a load coming out, so we decided to go under someone else's authority. Then we could drop the cargo insurance, because they would cover it Plus the reefer.
He stayed the weekend, too. Everything was set and he was at their facility so we could finalize things only to find out that we had to have a sleeper. Fortunately he'd met someone at the truck stop who'd offered him loads.
So now, I'm back to searching for another insurance company. -
who else is using progressive? How do you like it?
