So I'm looking to buy a truck within a year, I already have a job with more than enough pay to acquire the truck, make payments, and insurance. HOWEVER, the truck will not be working right away. It's going to be sitting for a little bit until I can get out of business school. I plan to take great care of this truck and almost completely rebuild it and make it ready to work with full overhaul and everything right before I go OTR with it. I'm wondering, will a company insure a truck that is not currently leased on, and just have a bobtail liability premium? Or can I insure it as a private vehicle until I'm ready to work it?

Insure it as a farm vehicle with 150 mile radius. Should be around $500 for a year.

You can insure it as a farm vehicle even if you don't own a farm? Same for tagging it?

There are no hard and fast definitions for farm. Do you have a back yard? I think it really comes down to the actual use. If you tag and insure it as a farm truck and go haul general freight you're probably going to get in trouble. If you just do it to keep her legal and drivable it should be fine. Yes, same with tagging it. If you register it for GVW under a certain amount you can get the farm plates at the DMV, and not have to go to the commercial trucking division.

Not sure where you are, but this is pretty applicable in the USA with minor differences from state to state. Do a web search for your state name and "farm truck registration" and you should find a place to start researching.

I'm in Oklahoma. This truck won't be working for any profit at all. It probably won't be hooked to a trailer for the majority of the time.

Do I have to prove I own a farm instead of a residential house?

Looks like OK requires some tax hoops to be jumped through (see below). If unable to register as a farm truck, perhaps check into registering it as an Recreational Vehicle.

My dad's friend tried to register his 91 T600 he bought as an RV and Oklahoma said nope. I'll talk to them when I get closer to buying a truck and see if it makes a difference if the truck won't be working for any profit, but then again they would want a way to prove that.

OOIDA !!! Call them, check them out. Become a member ! $45 a year worth every penny and then some.
I am very happy with their insurance. There is a caveat...NOT EVERY COMPANY WILL ACCEPT THEIR INSURANCE.
    I am paying about $680 a month.
    Hope this helps.
