We just started with a new authority our driver has 30 yrs experience with no accidents or tickets in five years. A lot of insurance wouldn't give me a quote because of being new, including Greatwest. OOIDA was by far the cheapest but some of the brokers I was going to use wouldn't accept them. Through a local insurance broker I found Redwood Fire and Casualty. It cost me just over $10,000.00 a year. Progressive was just a little higher but they wanted a lot more down. I was told if I hired a driver with less than 2yrs verified experience the premium would go "way up". Hopefully next year I will see my insurance cost drop a little. If I had the cash to pay the entire premium up front there was a large discount.

I've always heard it is because they do not have an AM Best rating of B+ or higher (at least that is Landstar's reason) but I guess you would have to ask each broker why as they may have different reasons.

I have Wilshire, and have had them for 4 years. Runs me 625.00 a month. I have all the same coverage as Nightwind. I was in a accident in Decanter Texas 3 years ago. Other guys fault, but Wilshire fixed my truck, paid for everything, no deductable, and then went after his insurance. Got me down time for the 3 days the truck was in the shop too. Watch out for Haliburton tanker drivers, they do some really stupid stuff!!

Maybe it is because OOIDA doesn't like brokers, and has sued a few of them over the years. Can't ever tell with brokers, a lot of them are rip off artists.

What kind of deductible are you carrying?

My truck is insured for 44k, my cargo insurance is at 250k, and my trailer is insured for 30k, all with a 1k deductible, and I pay 675. per month for everything. Collision, bob tail, medical and liability. IMO, that isn't to far out of line for the coverage I have.

Try bumping your deductible to 5K. When I did that my rate dropped $1500 per year.

Raindancer, how long did it take to get your insurance set up through OOIDA? I ask because they dont seem to be real good at having people available to talk to you, say they will have someone call you back then you dont get a call for a few days. That makes me wonder how much trouble I would have if I needed them quick. Just curious as to your overall satisfaction with thier customer service?
