My husband is wanting to get into trucking, but 14 years ago at 17 years old he stole vehicles from car lots. Because he broke inside the buildings to get the keys he was charged with Commercial Burglaries for each car he took. If that wasn't enough 10 years ago he was convicted of 2 reckless driving offenses. In June of this year he was found guilty of a failure to yield ticket. Would any companies even take him with a history like that? I'm afraid he'll go through CDL school and end up not finding anyone who'll hire him. I want him to be successful and follow his dreams, but is being an OTR Truck Driver too big of a dream for him?

Well the two reckless driving tickets were 10 years ago, I bet you will be okay. May have to put some time in with a crappy company but he should be okay in the long run. He may never work for one of the top outfits but there are plenty of fish in the sea. The demand for driver's is extremely high right now. The best advice I can give is that when he gets with his first company just commit to stay for a year. You don't want to couple a bad criminal history with a bad work history.

Maybe have your husband try to get his record expunged, might help him. Also if he has no accidents and just 1 ticket(failure to yield) I think he has a chance to get on with a company.

Great post here.......to the OP , ethos covered it pretty well. He should be able to find work. Have him remain patient , and remember it may be a while before a top tier company will give him a chance. After a couple years or so he should have many more choices than when he's just starting. Good luck!

I may sound a bit jaded here but i am not sure that someone with a history of such poor judgement should be driving a cmv on the highways.

A lot will depend on his work history for the past ten years. If he held a stable job for several years, it will certainly help. Not working, job hopping, etc. and his chances are greatly diminished.
    Worth a shot. Good luck.

7 I believe. He never does anything half-assed. If he's gonna get in trouble he seems to go all the way. Hopefully since all that was a decade or more ago, and that hes a completely different person since than he'll have a chance.

    Thanks everyone for your responses.

Many companies use a time limit and look at the actual crime. If it's for drugs or violence that would be a problem. Some won't hire period, like R.E. West, others will take it on a case by case basis. And as always, the insurance carrier has the final say.
