Hello, I’m asking this question for my girlfriend who is currently in class to get her A class license.

She’s 5’3” and she’s having issues reaching (and fully engaging) the clutch and simultaneously being able to see over the dash/hood in the training truck. Part of the problem is that the air ride seat in the truck has a leak so she regularly has to adjust the height in the middle of a maneuver. The school is claiming that they’re going to fix the leak asap.

Anyways, her main concern is regarding the actual test for her license, which she’ll be taking in the same truck that she’s training in. Are there any rules as to what aids the ‘vertically challenged’ can use during their final driving test? We’re in New Mexico, if that changes anything. I’m trying to help her figure things out for her test day.

    Thanks in advance!

I'm of similar height. I just would slide the seat forward as necessary and I usually drove with the seat at max height. I was trained on 1980s cabover Internationals and old Freightliners. I retired after 28 years recently. I don't remember one make or model of truck I couldn't adjust the seat to see and use all of the pedals, etc. On Volvos I rode at max seat height so I could easily see the front corners of the hood and bumper.

There isn't some sort of reward for finishing a maneuver faster than other drivers so she should take her time. BTW, every job application will ask if you need any sort of "reasonable accommodation" to do the job. She can say yes and state she needs pedal extensions. Also I used a memory foam lumbar pillow. A few of the older seats the bottom cushion might have been longer than I liked. New vehicles are built with minivan like features and easily accomodate to short drivers than the old trucks. She needs to be specific about what seating position problem she is having, not just "it's not working" or I don't like it." Is she not able to sit all the way back against the seat back and also not able to depress the clutch fully? She can scot forward for those very rarer times she need to fully depress the clutch. Most clutch use if just pushing it maybe 1/3 of the way toward the floor, yet newbies ALWAYS attempt to press it fully to the floor for every application, which is wrong and making life hard for her and the clutch brake.

Sometimes I would get in a truck to move it a short distance in the yard and just sit on the front edge of the seat instead of sliding it forward and raising it fuly up, etc. She just needs to get comfortable and drive carefully. That seat will disappear from her life when she gets her CDL. New trucks are very friendly to "normal size" people like me and not just for those freaks of nature that might be 5' 5" or taller. ;-)
