This really sounds like one of the dumbest ideas I heard of in quite awhile. You are going to school for a job where you want your kid to live in a truck with you?why didn’t you go to school to do hvac, welding, auto truck mechanic electrical plumbing etc where your kid could have a more structured life.

From the first post here --

Question #2: The short answer: yes.

Question #3: Short answer -- in the current freight environment, probably not.

Assuming you have BOTH....a clean driving record....AND ALSO....a clean criminal history -- your biggest problem...BY FAR....going forward....is finding a carrier that will hire you out of Florida, with no experience.

At this point, it looks like the overall freight market may get worse, before it gets better.

    Thus, some suggestions:
    • Get all the relevant CDL endorsements: tanker, hazmat...& doubles/triples (but especially hazmat). Those endorsements will help you stand out more from the other job applicants.
    • Pay special attention to any carriers that visit your CDL school while you are there. Honestly, right now....those carriers are your best bet for near-term CDL employment.

I believe kids are allowed on the truck during summer time, not as full time riders. But I could be wrong. My .02 ? Kids need a normal home upbringing, other kids to play with etc.

First off you don't know my situation or reasoning behind what I'm doing. I've been in a truck since I was 3 years old. Secondly I have other education as well as a home that's all paid off so i have flexibility in other fields. There are plenty of parents that take their kids on the road with them. This is not the 90s where I was riding in semi trucks with my dad during breaks. I don't see people having issues with families doing "van life" or "camper life with a family.

Don't even sweat it man. Let's refocus here...honestly, it could be difficult to take home 1400 weekly consistently your 1st year because historically, the first year is always rough. If you can catch on quickly, it can happen. I think you probably will since you've been around trucks for a lifetime so you'll have a leg up on other rookies. You living in Tallahassee is better than many other Florida rookies who live farther south. A company may be more inclined to hire you because of where your location is, as opposed to thise south of I-4. When you get at minimum a year, the industry opens up for you and you'll be able to command greater money, because there are some very reputable companies based in Florida once you get a year in. Also, those companies will have a much more liberal rider policy. Some companies want a passenger to be at least 12 years old, but I have seen younger. It just depends.

Thank you for your insight!!! Yea I've noticed that the first year is the toughest but after that I'm commanding better pay as you stated. I am a quick learner and I'm eager as well.

Yes!!! I've been reading that Florida is a freight dead zone. So far we've had Benny Whitehead come and speak with us. Next month is Schneider.
