So, I am looking to get my CDL this spring and really only have one concern.

Getting home every night to see my family.

I don't need to make big bucks; I just need to get home every night (or most every night. wouldn't mind spending one or two nights away from home a week)

    I am in Yakima, WA.

Is this a realistic outcome? Or am I wasting my time? If I am wasting my time, I will just forget it and move onto something else.

    Thanks for any advice!

I don’t know much about PNW, but if it’s the same as the southeast, it’s definitely doable.

if you’re willing to do lots of labor, food service will pay you big bucks and get you home every night. Lots of LTL gigs are starting to accept student drivers. Construction companies are always hiring.

The ‘you have to start OTR before local’ is a myth. Lots of us do it because we enjoy it or people didn’t research and signed a contract with a mega carrier for their ‘free’ CDL.

@Chinatown might know a thing or two.

While acquiring a cdl is a task in and of itself, you will also need experience. It takes time and practice to get good at backing and maneuvering a truck and trailer.

For this reason, many companies only hire those who have had one or two years of experience.

Once you have gained enough experience, I would keep my eye on LTI for local work in your neighborhood.

The food service guys that service my sandbar earn that money. Same with the beer guys.

    Craziness during the summer.

Good luck to you OP no matter what choice you make.

This company has a dock-to-driver program. If you'll start on the docks, the company will assist you in acquiring a CDL-A.
Has home every day positions for drivers.

If you should decide to start out on the docks with Oak Harbor Freight (or elsewhere)--get forklift certified, first (if you're not, already)--& then go talk to them.

If you are already forklift certified--you'll be a much more attractive prospect to them for dock work.
