Hello all, I am so excited to have found this place! First off, a huge thumbs up to all the drivers here. I have a newfound respect for you guys and ladies who drive! My husband just got his CDL through a school and just started driving OTR Thursday for them. I miss him so much and it's only been a month since he's been gone. I have done some research on different companies and so far have liked everything about Maverick, plus I live in Arkansas too! :) Me and hubby are trying to decide if he should just finish out his OTR training through the school(I don't know if I'm allowed to name the school) which would give him about 20,000 miles and then apply to Maverick, or if he should just apply now. The experience with the school he's at now has not been good. They withheld information and have not reimbursed him for his motel room he had to get while stranded at a Greyhound station on the way up there, has not gotten paid yet and other students said they weren't paid what they were supposed to be paid, etc. If he gets the 20,000 miles and applies to Maverick and is hired will he still have to do the student training? From reading somebody else's thread it is my understanding that students are able to come home during training? And if they can't come home the company pays for them to stay in a hotel so students don't have to be stuck at a truck stop on weekends. My husband is currently staying in the truck at a stop in Vegas while his instructor gets home time. lol How much of the freight is hands-free? The tuition reimbursement is for whatever school he went to to get his CDL, right? Maverick pays up to $5000 tuition reimbursement towards the school? Any info on the training and company would be great.

What CDL school?? Is it a company acadamy (i.e.-Swift or PAM/USA Driver Solutions)?? Is he learning Flatbed or driving a van?? If he is interested in Maverick, is he wanting to do Flatbed, Glass, or TCD (Reefer/Dry Van)?? I would say that if he HAS his CDL now, and wants to be a Maverick, he needs to apply ASAP, as the applicant line is pretty big here. It can take a while to get through the application process, and our company is very very picky on who it brings in to orientation. If he is wanting to pull a skateboard or do glass, then HE WILL NEED to go out with a trainer after he goes thru the barn (Load securement training after orientation). If his trainer lives like within 150 miles of his home, he can go home during the weekend hometime that his trainer gets. TCD freight is "hands free." LOL. If he wants "Hands free" then he does not want to do flat or glass. Maverick re-imburses up to $3000 for CDL school last I knew, that is the program that they have me on now. Read JimTheHut's thread called "HEADING FOR LITTLE ROCK" for a two year+ up to the day running story of a Maverick flatbedder's experience from the start. Very highly recommended. AND, if he wants to do glass, add RazorRange's thread recently started called "My Maverick Experience", it too is from day one up to today from a Glass Hauler's perspective. The TCD guys get on here once in a while, and there are a few threads in here about their experiences also.

Thanks for the quick response! He went to school at CR England. He is driving a dry van and I'm not sure which of those he'd be more interested in, probably whatever pays more to start. He's doing his Phase 1 training now which is supposed to get him about 20,000 miles in a month. How is the Little Rock facility set up? Is it like a hotel where the students stay and do they have to buy their own meals, is there a cafeteria or anything there? When do students start getting paid for orientation and training, etc? The first week is like a big interview, right? So do they let students know at the end of that week if they are hired? Or do they do all the training first and then get hired once they take the final eval? I am going to call and talk to a recruiter Monday because he can't while he's on the truck with his trainer.

Thanks for the quick response! He went to school at CR England. He is driving a dry van and I'm not sure which of those he'd be more interested in, probably whatever pays more to start. Flatbed starts out at .33/mile, raise at 3mo and at 6mo. After first year at .42/mile. Glass starts out a little higher. link: http://www.maverickusa.com/driving-jobs/student-program

He's doing his Phase 1 training now which is supposed to get him about 20,000 miles in a month. How is the Little Rock facility set up? Is it like a hotel where the students stay and do they have to buy their own meals, is there a cafeteria or anything there? Maverick's N. Little Rock terminal is first class. There is a hotel on the terminal grounds that has been dubbed The Maverick Hotel, it is nice, clean, and close walk to training facility. It is intentionally WITHOUT TV in the rooms- so students are focused on their training. Lunch meals are provided the first week-orientation week. The second week (Load securement training in the "Barn", meals are not provided, he will need to get his own.

When do students start getting paid for orientation and training, etc? Pay starts the first week.
The first week is like a big interview, right? Yes, he will be under a BIG MICROSCOPE.
So do they let students know at the end of that week if they are hired? Job offers are at the end of orientation week (assuming the student has made the cut)
Or do they do all the training first and then get hired once they take the final eval? Divisional training starts immediately after orientation.
I am going to call and talk to a recruiter Monday because he can't while he's on the truck with his trainer. Call Recruiting and ask for Mason. He will shoot straight with you. He will do a good job for him. Now, remember, it can take a little while to get the invite to come to orientation at NLR. Just read the threads on Maverick. In the search box above type Maverick, and look for the two I mentioned before. And some of the others are informational, such as the BS thread, gives ya some perspective on some of the things we deal with or encounter sometimes that cause us to vent a little or ask our fellow drivers on here for advise.

And, BTW, 20K miles in one month as a student in training his very FIRST MONTH, is probably stretching it IMO. That means he would have to drive 5000 mile per week for a month. I don;t see how that could be done legally- and CRE uses elogs (as Maverick does too) I would be shocked if a newbie student gets 20K in his first month. Not that really even matters should he come over to Maverick soon.

I would guess CRE does that "training" while running the truck as a team. So in reality he would only drive 10k.

Do they have a sign on bonus? Thank you to all who have answered my questions!! Really hoping with Maverick he would be home more often than CR England which is only 2-3 days out of the month :(

Maverick would get him home almost every weekend in the flatbed division. In Glass or TCD he would be required to work a minimum of 2 weeks between each home time. He would then get 2 days at home. or more if he chose to work longer. It's supposed to be 1 day at home for every week on the road. I just worked for 2 weeks and I'm now going to get 4 days at home because of the load they gave me going home. I only asked for 2 but they shorted me last time I came home.

If a Flatbed driver gets held out over a weekend he is then supposed to be given priority over other drivers to go home the second weekend.

There is no sign on bonus.
