Orientation pay is like $550 for the week. ($50 is in cash your first day). Same thing for your whole time in training ($500/wk) - that is,,, unless it has recently changed. Ask Mason to be sure.

Well school is going good, TONS of info the first day but I'm settling in quite well. I also sent in my application to Maverick online yesterday, hopefully the snowball picks up speed and I hear back soon! Also I saw a MavIC truck dead-headed EB I-290 near Chicago around 9:30 on the way to class. That's got to be a sign right?? Haha

He was probably headed to the Tin Mill (US Steel Plant in E. Chicago, IN).

I'm looking at Maverick as well. Filled out an app this past Fri or Sat night. Spoke with a recruiter yesterday & today. Said they should have my stuff processed in 5-7 days.

In my second week of school. First week was basically all classroom. So nice to get behind the wheel yesterday & today. Yesterday was all about pre-trip (just the tractor) & shifting. Today we hooked up the trailers & did a lot of straight backing & both the offsets. After warming up with all that tomorrow morning, I'll be parallel parking. Really enjoying it! Hope your school continues to go well for ya!

What is Maverick's take on people with a minor case of asthma? (By minor, I mean someone that only uses an inhaler once or twice a day every three or four days.)

Glad to hear school's going great for you. Not to nudge you in any direction, but I came from dry van/reefer and after driving a flatbed, I'm glad I don't drive those anymore. When I'm going down the road and look in my mirrors, instead of seeing an almost 14 foot tall, 53 foot long wall of " blind tragedy waiting to happen", I see my surroundings, the road, the cars around me, etc. Often I can even see the car(s) directly behind me.

Also, the trailer is 48ft, not 53. This is great for going down the road, going around curves and yes, even backing. Well, backing a spread axle still feels weird to me, but at least I can usually see. I'm certainly no fan of tarping, but (IMHO) the much greater safety of the flatbed trailer is worth it.

Your opinions may vary, just thought I'd throw that out there.

That is probably best to ask a recruiter.

Thanks, CoalHeart. More good points to consider. I keep going back & forth --- van or skateboard? I understand the more physical part of flatbedding, but physical work's never bothered me. Also understand the greater risk of injury with securement. Many say there's more money in flatbed; others say no. I'm actually getting into trucking b/c I've always thought I wanted to truck since I was 14. Well, 35 years & two previous careers later, I'm finally diving in. Just want to make a wise decision with my first driving job. Read too many nightmare stories about various companies, mixed reviews. Of course, I always keep in mind that a person posting something on a forum may well be an idiot with no work ethic. ;)
