I was reading the Shaffer FAQ from their website and it has this info about tolls and routing. I have two questions:
1. If I'm running the Northeast are they going to try to tell me to run some other road other than a major toll road? I'm talking about a road with alot of stop lights and through small towns vs. running the interstate/intrastate. I already went through this with Barr Nunn...not doing it again.
2. How is their routing? Do they stick to the major interstates and highways mostly or are they going to get creative with routing and take me all over God's creation on narrow little roads with 55 mph speed limits?
These two things could be deal breakers for me. I copied and pasted the FAQ below:
Q. Do Crete Carrier and Shaffer Trucking have toll cards?
A. Yes. We have E-ZPass and I Pass transponders; however, not all travel on toll roads or turnpikes is authorized. Toll roads and turnpikes are authorized at time of dispatch by virtue of being included within the suggested fuel routing.
Q. Does the Company have forced routing?
A. No. We do provide a suggested route guide at the time of dispatch. This assists us with maintaining fuel efficiency and supports our ability to pay drivers practical route miles instead of short route miles.

Shaffer provides with each trip a "Suggested Route". They will also provide fuel stops along that route. You are not required to drive the route they suggest but the fuel stops they provide may force you to do so. They will route you around some toll roads, but alot of the time you get routed on the toll roads. I think that sometimes it depends on who the customer is.

they are a great company to work for , i did but screwed it up by failing a drug test. but to answer your questiions, ast the other driver said they give a suggested route for you to take. sometimes it's really dumb, ie they used to always have me take a side road down through IN instead of 65. i always to 65 and never got in trouble. they do give you fuel stops which you have to use so if the stop they have is on a route they give you then i'd suggest taking it. Sometimes they give you fuel stops where you have to backtrack to go to it and get back on route. Forget the name of it but i't s in CT. You come down and hit 95 cuz your load is going south but you have to go n to get to the TA for about 6 miles or so. It was my understanging that they didn't say much until you went over 10-% out of route miles. I went my own ways a lot and never went out of route. as far as tolls they route you around a lot of them but i've used them a few times and never heard about it. theres one place up in MASS that is right off the turnpike but they try to take you thorugh some town. I followed theirs the 1st time and never again cuz i got completly lost ... i wouldn't suggest going all the way across the PA turnpike but a few miles here or there and i never heard anything there was one road i always avoided when thy'd route me on it, some road that goes through OH finally one day another driver and i were picking up and delivering to the same place and i decied i would follow him and it turned out to be a great road jsut not an interstate. If you have the chance to get on with them i would do it in a heartbeat. Just learn you logging loopholes and you'll do fine. i worked there a year and definatly got my 110,000 miles
