I lived in Thailand for 8 years with my wife and then we moved back at the end of 2009, I had a few months job at Mcdonald's then in the end of 2010 I pulled a rotater cuff and labrum (the deepest muscle in your shoulder that is the hardest to fix) I was in a sling for about 14 months then had 9 screw/anchors put into my left shoulder and then by doc's orders was off doing anything for another 14 months. I am going to "International Trucking School" for 5 weeks for CDL-A as the State of Michigan "Michigan Works" Employment agency footed the $7,500 bill.. I am curious if I will able to get a job since I have not worked in the past three years and before that only a few months.. before them few months I was in Bangkok for several years (if that makes sense sorry lol) I was reading that gaps of employment will cause issues?

My other question is I am on low dose blood pressure meds, I see that blood pressure is tested? Does that mean I cannot work there because I take blood pressure medicine and therefor it is COMPLETELY controlled? Or would it mean I cannot work there IF it was NOT controlled?

I am quite worried about this although the first issue about being overseas my counselor at I.T.S called 6 major companies and none of them said it would be an issue with me getting hired, BUT reading here I just want to make sure..

Also is things with Steven's better for those that go to them with a CDL-A in hand? I wanted to work for Steven's (before reading negativity although I read nice things as well like APU's and what not new vehicles etc. etc.) or Schneider as I can do regional Midwest solo with sign-on bonus's as well..

has anyone heard good or bad about N.T.B? I ask because they have a DC in Lansing,Michigan right near my home..

    Thank you everyone!

dont know how hard it will be to find a job with such a "storied" work history. im sure youll find someone willing to hire you, but it may take some looking around.

i personally wouldnt go to stevens, but that is based on one review (a good friend of mine had a bad experience with them). i certainly wouldnt discourage anyone else from working for them based on one person's experience. ive seen good reviews about stevens...more so than bad ones. ive also read good reviews about schneider. id go with whatever looks like it will work best for your situation, but be prepared to stay with whatever company you choose for a minimum of 6 months to 1 year if you intend on staying in the industry.

i wish you luck. certainly sounds like you are due.

With your lack of recent work experience, the prior lack of verifiable foreign work, and the Medical issues that you have had, Stevens won't take you. They are very strict on work experience.

and when you do finally get a trucking job, dont sign up for the per diem.thats your money to claim at tax time. You sign up for it and most companies will pay you less then what they said they would start you at.In other words, they use the per diem to make up the difference and that just screws you at tax time.If the company tells you they will start you at say,36 cents a mile and you take the per diem, they will pay you only 25 cents a mile and make the per diem look like they are giving you 35 or 36 cents a mile.they have ways of hiding it.I drove for jbhunt and figured it out what they were doing.i complained about it and got less and less milage.first time i got thru my area of home,i quit that company quick.

Thanks guys, I just spoke with W&S and they told me they would hire me * most likely* but thats without telling the full story other than what she asked as far as criminal history which I have none, tickets which were all fix its, and my location and approved schooling.. At .29 cents a mile $20 a stop is more than I made on disability. The school would not take me unless my history was OK and the school told me that the companies they called were a-ok with circumstances..

I was just hearing this blood pressure thing and it scared me, but do I have to even tell anyone I take a medication?

As long as your blood preasure is under control with meds, you should be ok. Depending on what it is when you get your physical, you may only get a DOT medical card for one year instead of the normal 2 years.

You might want to check with WS, they deliver furniture and it might require you to tailgate anything loaded in the trailer.

The problem isn't going to be your BP. It's going to be your shoulder. Most bigger companies want you to be able to prove that you can physically do the job.

Oh I can lift and carry over 50 pounds the shoulder is stronger than the other arm, so no trouble with that, my point was that was my reason off of work was healing to explain the time off. It's all good now I was just worried because of not having a jobfor that period
