With any motor and trans combo the weight of load is gonna play a role in mpg . I would say your mostly correct in that the dd13 was probably designed more for a regional application but can still do the work of the dd15 . The DD13 was designed to deliver better mpg in a lighter package but I'm not sure of fuel numbers to be exact . Also the DD13 is rated at 1millon miles and the DD15 at 1.2 million , I would suspect anyone at that mileage is getting rid of the truck anyways .

I think the problem we had was the company was putting their company drivers into the lightweight Cascadias with the small sleeper and the dd13 so they could haul more weight in the trailer vs a normal Cascadia with the DD15. So they were using a lower HP/TQ truck to carry more weight because the truck itself weighed less.

If I had to get one I’d get the Freightliner most likely. The Volvo is too high mileage. Both are really too old and plenty of miles. It’s a lot easier to buy a newer truck and pay a few hundred more a month for a payment than have big repair bills on top of a payment.
