Hey, I have a buddy who just got his CDL and is running into some problems with a couple of things. I didn't know what to tell him so I figured I would put it to the vast knowledge that is "The truckers Report".
Number 1 (this is incredibly stupid, but it is true). He was in the Army reserves for about 10 years and got sick of it. He decided he wanted out so he failed a drug test on purpose last year so he got a general discharge. Not a dishonorable. Is this going to hold him up on getting a job?
Number 2. 10 years ago he was involved in a major car accident where he had a major head injury. Reconstructive surgery to his face and the loss of smell and partial loss of taste. He hasn't had any problems (dizzyness, headaches etc.) as a result of the injury and it has been pretty much forgotten.
He applied for and got a pre-hire from TMC but upon calling the recruiter they didn't say anything about the drug test but got all hung up on the head injury saying that one of their doctors would have to sign off on him and it may be a few weeks before they even know if they would let him see one of their doctors.
He is a good guy who has made some really poor decisions.
Any advice would be appreciated,
Thanks,
Dave

There are better ways of getting out of the military. I think your friend was just using drugs and got caught. He only has to report 1 weekend a month and 2 weeks out of each year. He's done this for 10 years. He knows how the game is played.

I agree! This was just a case of pure laziness! The head injury thing is probably cut and dry, as long as a Dr will sign off on it, but the drug thing is........well I hate to comment on that on to much, but it just goes to show what kind of person he was. Was being the operative word, has he grown up in the past 10 yrs, does he see now that was the wrong path to take? Only questions he can answer.

AGREED!
ALSO about the head thing....this is a big concern and if the doctor is smart, he will have a MRI done so that he can write off on this with a clear mind.
If something should happen out there GOD FORBID with your FRIEND driving, would not look good on the doctor at all who cleared him. -
I agree on the "failing the drug test" thing wholeheartedly. I'm not so naive that I think for a second he is telling the whole truth on that one.
I am hoping that he has truly changed his ways.
TMC just kind of gave the impression that they weren't interested in even letting him explain much on the head injury. Maybe they saw the drug test info and just don't want to say that that is the real reason?.......
I hope it all works out for him and I will do what I can for him, but if I know he is out there doing drugs while driving I have already told him that I will turn his sorry ### in.
Thanks,

You're all quick to judge him over failing a piss test, but I'm sure many of you have smoked weed before too. It doesn't make you more or less of an employee, nor does it mean that he's a pothead now. It was years ago. And any military service can be not worth the consequences involved. I got myself kicked out for smokin weed on purpose to get out of a 3 year involuntary reinlistment in recruiting... and I'd do it again. I was in a go no where hell whole of a situation, and I chose myself and my family over the army, and took a route that although not the best choice was a sure fire one. That doesn't mean that I'm a dirtbag, crackhead who'll never do his job. I work harder than most and put mass amounts of emphasis on doing the job correctly, and efficiently. But because the army put drug abuse on my 214 people like you aren't smart enough to even ask, they just assume the worst.
That aside, most trucking companies wont have a problem with the failed p test after 3 years, a few say no for life. So he shouldn't have too hard of a time with that. His best chance is to see a Dr and get his head checked it doesn't sound like it's a problem...but you never know. -
Wouldn't hitting on your boss, get you out quicker? Pun intended.
Every military guy I know loves illegal drugs, except weed, it's for "cats" -
If you think this is tough...You'd have never made it in Nam !!! Stay out of trucks son !
