From time to time we still talk about that irish pretty that approached me in front of her inside the cab, I was outside working on mirriors in Rochester bullpen for Guinness Ale.

If she needed proof that night or any night that was what did it for her. Told the pretty that thank you but no, wife heard you better vanish. And she did in a short brevity version of that story.

Ran into a old flame in baltimore long ago. She purred and petted before i knew what was up. I tell you what. If marriages get tested, it was then. We talked over dinner nothing tough and last I heard she is doing well. Which makes me happy for her. But as a deaf person she has had a hard life.

    well 2 points to cover..

first.....There are FAR worse ways to die"

    true,
    1) you could be eating at the truck stop counter cuz there were no tables to sit at, and all the lawyers, doctors, DOT men, and former Navy Seals, Rangers, Special Ops, bore you to commit suicide right there where you sit

    2) you could be eating a roller dog from the fuel desk, and have a coronary.

    3) you could walk into the shower and slip and fall and crack open your head from the moss growing on the floor

    4) you could be standing on the loading dock, and a jerk forklift driver impales you into your trailer wall.

    5) you could be climbing a hill and a slow Swift truck actually passes you and you have a heart attack, and fall off the cliff.

    next,

to YOU marriage may be an outdated institution, this almost (but i ain't entirely certain) that you got divorced and got raked over the coals???

and as far as the historians and sociopaths studying this oddity, my wife and i have been married 55 years, but we knew each other from when we were in school.

i guess that makes us a time tested oddity.....

Also there are from the State School and some even much further back I think in John Archer in Maryland before the big Asbestos's scare that closed the place in Hartford County (I need to revisit that subject and catch up on them.) I think at 6 I had my first girlfriend at the same age and we were inseparable. I was moved over to the state school in Columbia while she probably finished her education and lived out her life by now. But a brief time when two bright stars get together like that in the universe by figure of speech, its amazing. Even if you both were only 6 and did not yet learn anything bad about life.

Part of that was very carefully guided by essentially the entire school staff. They knew that we were a couple and I must say in those days they did a great job overall encouraging that love for each other. Even our families made accommodation from time to time up there. It was a happy time for us.

However when you add in war, life, work, conflicts, vices, bad blood or anything at all long or short in your years, if I had seen her again today it will take a week to talk and catch up because we would not "Know each other" well enough to proceed. But who knows.

Texas is a common law state. All you have to do is be living together and both agree that you are married and refer to each other as husband and wife and both be residents of Texas and the state courts will recognize you as married. So you may still have to fight for your stuff in court.
The only reason to do it “officially” is for certain medical or insurance benefits that require it in order to include a spouse.
I know of plenty of couples that just live common law as normal. My wife has 3 cousins from an aunt and uncle that have been happily together since 1975 and have never officially been married.
