hi their and nice to see a forum for this.

Well heres a couple questions i have about getting a cdl and going otr.
first off let me explain my situation, i am 25 years old always loved to drive and currently work for a expiditing company as a dock guy/ airport sweaper, i drive straight trucks, cube vans, vans, and i park the semi's after close so i have a little experance, i have been doing this for 6 months now.

my company i work for is shady and knows i need/want exp doing this so they will not give me a raise from the 8$/hr i work for, so i want to get my cdl and go otr, cause thats where the good $$ is right?

anyways, i have been looking into driving schools to get my cdl

first question is should i even look into schools for my cdl since i got a lil exp driving semis and head straight to the scatery of state?

2nd is if thats not a good idea any good schools out their, or here ( Michigan) that i should look into?

i been to a few and done some rescarch of them and have heard nothing but bad stuff about them.

sorry for the spelling, never have been good at it

Being that you are fro Detroit, you already know that the economy is in the toilet. Auto sales, retail sales and construction are all down. And therefore trucking is slower than normal. Could you make more in trucking than the $8.00 per hour (16K year) you are making now? YES. Will you become rich and live the good life? NO.

Do you have any issues in your background? Accidents? Tickects? DWI? Or Criminal Convictions? If so, you are going to face stiff competion for a job.

You should have better options if you attend a PTDI certified school. Look into Baker College of Flint or Baker College of Cadillac.

    Baack Thanks this.

The making over $16 k a year is questionable and you'll be away from home 3 or 4 weeks at a time .

but PLEASE don't let me mislead you into believing that can actually make $8.00/hour driving a truck. if your weekly miles are down around 1000-1200, like a LOT of folks right now, you might actually be closer to the $4.00-5.00/ hour range. help him lord.

i do talk to truckers all day as i am kinda in the business already, i hear lots of stuff, but when i tell them i make 8/ hour they laugh, they all make 12-22/hour doing local but in order to get a good local gig i must go otr and get my hours/years in just like everyone else. when i said the big $$ i meant it is more then 8/hr and i do not plan to work for any of the big bad companys that have you sitting more then driving, but if its what i have to take to get my 1-2 years in ill do it i love to drive and hell why not get paid for it.

SOME local guys make pretty good money, that's true. BUT getting a good local gig in a good economy is nearly impossible. in a bad economy - FORGET IT!! and right now, even getting a 1200 mile a week OTR gig would be difficult - unless you're replacing a rube who just quit after realizing he's only going to make $200-300 a week. but I guess if you're really determined, you'll just have to find out the hard way.

Seriously , there are some saying they can't make over $300 a week . They get $.30 a mile , can't get 1,000 miles a week . When you deduct the cost of school that puts quite a few more down well under $20,000 . Then you have the ones that going to a training carrier , quit or get terminated before meeting their year obligation . They've earned less than $10,000 and get billed $5,000 for schooling .
