I'm currenty attending NETTTS. I have a few questions that I'm sure can be answered here because since I've been reading all the information and advice some questions have come to mind. I'm almost half way through my 520 hour training/ 20 week course at NETTTS. I have a son of 2 years old and a soon to be wife of going on 8 years. I'm currently being pulled in to OTR because this seems to be a great way to get expereience, and make money. The down falls is home time but while my son is still young I'm thinking that OTR would be the best option at this point and time in my life. Not saying that im going to do OTR for my entire career but for the next 5 years it sounds like a great option to jump into.

So my questions are What are the top companies for OTR with the best pay and Benies to get Pre-Hired for?

What should I expect for a yearly gross pay if I'm willing to go out for 6-8 weeks at a time before thinking of coming home for 2 days or so?

I'm currently 23 years old is this a good career to get into for the rest of my life?

Is it possible to work 3 weeks on and take a few days off or would companies rather you be out long then 3 weeks at a time?

What is the average salary gross for truckers in the first 2 years OTR?

What is the average truckers gross that has been in the buisness longer then 5 years OTR?

I have 3 moving violations from when i was younger 18. but havent had any in 5 years. I have no felonies. is my recored good enough?

I'm very determined and want to do anything to get started off on the right foot. Any advice and or answers to my questions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks you, and thanks for having me on this forum.

you get 1day home for every 7 days out usually
newbies average around 30-40k first yr
seasoned drivers can make upwards of 60-80k or more, really depends on what division you go with, tankers make good money, flatbedders have better opportunities like Oversize which pays Good.
it is a Good career but you need a very supportive family and gotta really love your job.
hope this helps you out,Good Luck

You being a family man, you need good pay.
The good pay is with tanker/hazmat. Get those endorsements along with a passport & TWIC.
If you do this and are aggressive with the applications, you should be making $60K - $70K + annually within 12-24 months after graduation from CDL school. You can make this money local or OTR. Ignore the "experience required" on companies websites & apply anyway.

Thanks for the Responses. They have helped me and are great advice! Now when you say passport are you talking about the passport as in Identification? and TWIC? Not sure what that is exactly. I'm deffiantly going to get the Tanker/Hamat endorsements as soon as I get my CDL License. Thank you guys!

Now for companies. What are some Respectable companies with good benefits?

Get a passcard its cheaper than a passport. Only $65 n a photo from walgreens is 10. Look for a company that pays more than 33 cpm starting out. I work for Maverick in the TCD division, started out at 35 cpm, 3 months later hit 38 cpm and 6 months I'm at 41 cpm. In 1 year i goto 42 cpm. Look at the CSR scores. Stay away from CRST, england, swift, pam, stevens... All the really big ones. Do your HOMEWORK... Go to the truckstop and talk do different drivers. Get their word, cause the recruiters are silver tongue devils.

A passport is for crossing the border in and out of Canada.A TWIC card is the Transportation Workers Identification Card,it is used for access to ports.Stay far far away from C R England,Swift and Stevens transport.Where you live is something that will determine which company to drive for.Do not let a recruiter talk you into a L/P program.Pick up some driver recruiter books at local truck stops and look thru them. You can always talk to drivers in your area.

Thanks everyone! And thank you China town for the list of Tankers/Hazmat companies. I tried to pm everyone that posted a thank you but I do not have enough posts to do so right now. I already have a Passport so I can check that off. Now for a TWIC card where abouts do I get one of these DMV?

I know someone in Roehl. He is trying to get me to come over to them. Is this a good company to work for or are major companies basically treat their employee's as sheep?

To answer original question and not get side tracked on pascard/passport....It all depends on the company. I work for TMC trans. Yes I have to tarp, but they have a paid training. On weeks I get home I make at least 1000/week and on weeks I stay out 1200+/week. Last year, ( my first year as a trucker) I made 58,000. I average 47 cent / mile. Flat bed is a lot of work because you need to strap and tarp, but its very rewarding. For TMC, you can get home weekly and if you stay out you can take an extra day off when you do get home. I found staying out 2 or 3 weeks was best for me.

Now I'm a trainer and make 1600+/week and I'm only in my second year. I'm on track to make over 80,000 this year and I get home every 2 or 3 weeks.

Driver above said 20-40k your first year...At TMC, I shattered that goal. They will never ask you to run illegal and are a greet company. Your other options are, Swift, Us express, Warner, or some of the other big names. All of them pay horribly. Do to insurance requirements, no small company can get insurance for new drivers so you will need to go with the big names to start. Feel free to msg me I fyou want more info on TMC, but I think it was a great choice for me and i am making tons.
