I'm a 4 wheeler and I have a question. Why do some truck drivers pass every one and their brother when it's snowing outside. I assume they're loaded and get good traction. But can they stop any quicker?:biggrin_2556:

I was looking for a place to say this and after reading this thread - this is the place!

I want to say that I am sorry for all the times that I pulled out in front of a truck thinking "Oh they'll slow down for me". Now that my husband is a trucker, I have a great deal of respect for you guys! I understand now how difficult it is to drive those things. I pray often that God would keep him safe and others around him.

I do have to admit that until he went to school and told me how hard it is to control that thing I never knew. As stupid as it sounds I used to think that truck drivers were such good drivers and they could handle it. (feel free to throw something at me) I was an idiot! I don't think the general public understands, like I didn't. And there are always those fools that know and are just that, fools.

So... I am sorry and I can only change my own driving, but I hope others would too.

First I'm a 4-wheeler. Now with that said.
I respect trucker's for what they drive. More than once they have help me on the road. When I call out on the CB.
The majority of 4-wheeler drivers are just not educated. When it comes to trucks. I was taught by my dad. When passing, you don't move back over. Intill I see your headlight in my right 1/3 of my rearview mirror. Watch out for the blind spot. Where it's hard to be seen. Most important, When they are signaling for a right turn. Just because the rear of the trailer is half out of the right lane and the semi is in the left lane. Does not mean he/she is signaling wrong or don't know what lane to be in. I have seen more than once out here in Los Angeles. Where 4-wheeler will literally squeeze between. Just to get to the front of that empty right lane. Than get caught/squeeze between the trailer and the curb. 4-wheeler don't understand tracking radius, blind spot, weight ratio to stopping distance and a whole lot more.
I drive a chevy avalanche weighted in about 8,000 lbs. I get the same thing happenning to me. Don't think I don't have blind spot. By back and sides are nasty. My back will hide a sedan if their within 45 ft. I'll only see the roof. At night they just vanish, no headlights. I weight at least double or 2/3 more than most car's. When it comes to stopping, even I need space.
But than the world is turning into an "It's about me and no one else. " society. If I can't be first or in front, than I make sure you don't attitude.

    I just cruise.

A loaded truck does do better than an empty one in the traction department. Dump trucks have the easiest time in this regard. The reason there is axle weights. A tandem axle on a tractor-trailer is limited to a weight of 34,000 lbs. On a dump truck it depends on the state. Here in MD, 3-axle dump trucks can gross 65,000 lbs. With approx a 20 ton load on one of those, about 50 of that 65,000 is on the tandem drive.

They don't stop any faster though.

Well, that's a gratifying thought. But a chilling one would be how many times you took your life into your hands when you did that.

We just need people to come on here and do a little reading. There is a wealth of information here. Truckers may rule the roost here, but all are welcome.

Mack in my comment I highlighted some truck drivers because I understand it's only that 1% that think just because they have traction they should weave through traffic with the road covered in snow. I just don't understand why they do it. Truck drivers have so much to loose. In my 4 wheeler I could run into someone's car for the hell of it and just face higher insurance. Truck drivers face JAIL!!! I mean hello! But that's where professional truck driver and steering wheel holder come in. Maybe I'm off base but really am I? Anyways I just had a close call yesturday in the snow and I got heated but I have a family full of truck drivers so I can call them and harrass them. HA HA. Just kidding have a good one.

Well before I ever married a trucker, I have always noticed that when merging on to an interstate that a trucker will move over for you, if can, :biggrin_25514:when a 4 wheeler says the hell with you. Also 4 wheeler will report truckers just cause they do not like their speed, they are in a bad mood and many other things. Also before I married a trucker, ONLY time I ever call in on a trucker is to report how well they are driving cause I know truckers get called in for STUPID ####. Yes, there are bad drivers in each aspect, but truckers tend to be more alert and drive more courtious to others around them.Truckers need to be treated with more repect then they are given. 4 wheelers will bytch about everything about a trucker:biggrin_25510:, specially if the trucker is in there way, but, however 4 wheelers will be the first one to complain when things they want in a store is not on a shelf for them to buy.

Im pretty sure thats because the trucker knows that people dont know how to merge. We find it easier to move over rather than battling the 4 wheeler for position.

I do not know if this has been brought up or not, but here it goes. I find myself sometimes stuck in a situation where I cannot get over for merging traffic, due to a vehicle beside me of course. So in turn once the merging car has either realized I am not getting over, nor cannot slow down, they go toi pass me and look up to flip me off.... Is this really plain ignorance of common people who think we are doing it on purpose or what? If I could get over I would, but you have to realize slowing down nor running someone over is not always the option....

  10. True Story and when I look back Iwould have waited longer!

I was entering into oncoming traffic crossing a four-lane, because of the no traffic coming my way, and they were a good 8 to 10 seconds away. I pulled out and I saw a BIG RIG in the outgoing traffic and I wave at him and continued into the middle media for turning left or right.

That poor man in the Big Rig was probably having a ulcer at that moment and I am so sorry I added to his stressful day. I waved at him as he went by and gave him a HUGE SMILE and a THUMBS UP as his face was staring back at me with such a look of ( an unusual look, I think he didn't know if he should scream or smile) .

Any more if someone gives me the finger , first thing I will try and access is; Do I deserve it or DO I DIAL 911 for a ROAD RAGE looking for some metal to twist........!

    Defensive driving for sure anymore!

    Gosh!
So on that note the next time I am in the postion to make a Truckers life a little easier out there I will.....4 sure as "Sally Public" Driver!

I know this is a rhetorical question......... but why is that a good 90%+ of car drivers have no clue what merge means. I watch every one that comes down the ramp and 90%+ of them NEVER look once at the road they are getting onto until right at the end of the ramp. There is no time to adjust their speed to MERGE into traffic.
