I have an uncle who owns a construction co. and I have been working for him part-time. I mostly operate equipment but sometimes I help the truck driver load and move equipment. I am planning on getting my cdl but I dont really want to go to school and pay $4000. I will be driving for him part-time so theres some expierence. The issue is this is under the table pay. I am planning on trying to get a job later this year or next year with a constuction company or equipment rental co. hauling equipment when we move. How do potential employers check for verified expierence?? Do they just call references? Do you they have some kind of data base to pull info. from? Basically if I apply for a job I want to know if they call my uncle which will be a reference and he says yes he drove for me would that be sufficient? Thank you very much for the answers.

Most ill do both, not only call but check mvr and dac reports..If you were being paid under the table..also probably means hire dates weren't reported so your dac etc won't show them..so all the company can rely on is contact with your uncle..

DAC can be used by companies to report incidents and accidents but they CAN also list hire/quit dates as well

Its a driving record that is universal..any state or commercial entity can request a copy or make an entry..its your commercial MVR in a nutshell

Your state mvr is your private license to the point that you got a cdl..once you have a cdl license you have a DAC.

If you are late delivering a load, your company can make a dac entry..if you quit and leave the truck at a truckstop instead of returning it to a company terminal or secured drop yard..they can make a dac entry..if you hit something or someone and its ruled an incident or accident..there will be a dac entry..

It runs for a 7 year period..the 8th year knocks off the 1st year as I understand it.

You hire on to a company or quit or are fired..they can make a dac entry

Report a bad tire on a trailer or tractor..they may make a dac entry...

Once you are working for a company that is paying you a paycheck..keep an eye on your dac..check it every 6 months or so so that if they have put anything on it you need to contest you can before making a change of employment. Its something you want to keep tabs on...the wrong entry on it can end your driving career for 7 years. Equipment abandonment..reportable accidents, equipment damage are all big no nos..

A company I worked for entered every time I called in to report that a trailer needed a tire replaced..my dac was 4 pages long..all tire entries..the next company looked at me and asked me if I was screwing up all the tires..I said, nope..they just had a lot of screwed up trailers that they sent me to pick up...they had seen it before from JB hunt..I refused to run trailers with tires that were questionable..and they hated me for it..LOL

Wow sounds like they could pretty much roast you if they wanted to. In a nutshell how many companies do actually report on it?

All major commercial carriers use DAC..and yes, they can roast you, which is why you need to keep an eye on your dac and fight any entries you don't agree with, either by yourself, or with the assistance of a lawyer that is familier with FMCSA and the DAC..its almost like contesting entries on your credit report..there is a process to be followed to contest entries..you, and they, should be familiar with the process before contesting an entry...the difference between a credit report and the DAC is the credit bureaus will only enter that you contested it and why..DAC you can get the entries removed.

Companies will call your uncle so you and your uncle better have the same story so companies don't think you're trying to put one over on them if u catch my drift. Some may want him to fax a perfomance sheet back to them. But for the most part all they do is call and to them your employers word is law.

Most local and smaller companies do not use DAC. I have worked for 3 different companies that do not use it. So in 10 years of driving I have no DAC record.
If you drive for your uncle and then apply to mostly smaller, local companies. DAC will probably not be an issue.
If you apply with larger, national companies. They will probably check it and see nothing there. If they ask, just tell em you drove for companies that do not use that crooked, corrupt system.

Thanks for everyone`s replies regarding this. My only other question is if I get my cdl myself and drive for my uncle part time and not go to the class, could this potentially be a problem when I apply at companies later this year or early next year? I guess what I am asking is if the school will be any kind of advantage even though I have somewhere to get expierence after I get the cdl myself......Get it? Thanks alot.
