I anticipate maintenance will cost me anywhere from $5,000-$10,000 at most the first year. You're probably thinking that's not very much, but I've worked on trucks before and done maintenance by myself. It saves a fortune on repair costs. A good example is king pins. I was quoted about $1,000 - $1,500 to do them. I bought them myself ($210) and installed them myself. So it only cost me between $210-$300 (If you really want to include the cost of using my own tools). I also won't be buying a truck that requires a lot of maintenance to get safely onto the road, which I'm finding to not actually be that difficult. There are plenty of crap ones out there, but quite a few decent rigs as well. You also should remember that I am doing this essentially as a hobby. If something breaks I'm not going to be out of a job. I can take however much time I want to fix whatever's wrong. But of course it does depend on what, if anything, breaks on the truck. When I get the truck I will be going over it and replacing ANYTHING it needs BEFORE taking it out on the road. Of course this assumes that I won't have any major engine or transmission problems, but in the event I do I'll have to cross that bridge when I get there.

I do intend to haul only once or twice a month to start. It would be a max of 250 miles one way hauling in both directions.

I don't plan on having it pay for my insurance, maintenance, registration, or myself. That's what I have my other job for.

And insurance for $6K/year for me. Yep 100% possible. For starters I know someone who pays this much for insurance a year and is only on their permit. Second, I've quoted insurance for myself and it was $5580/year without collision coverage and $5975 with collision for 1 year. I also qualify for a low mileage discount on the insurance that isn't included in the quote. That will save me anywhere from 10% to 20% off of that price.

    So, you were saying?

You sound like a spoiled child. It's a bad idea, people told you it's a bad idea, now you're crying. If you want to make it work, go ahead. It's not going to be profitable though. You want to throw tens of thousands of dollars to go on a really lousy ride twice a month (test driving that astro doesn't really let you know what it's like to sit there on a 500 mile trip). You're better off paying an instructor to give you a driving lesson every week or something if you want to be behind the wheel, lol. You should get yourself some instruction anyway. You're way too confident for someone that hasn't had any training, and wants to just hit the road after scraping by the DMV skills test.

Don't expect anyone to tell you this is a good idea, lol.

Dude, my questioning you comes from years of hearing great ideas that have failed. Many of us don't want people to fail, it is that simple.

I am not picking on you because of your computer job, but because this is a profession, we need to treat it as a profession and if that means discouraging people from becoming hobbyist in it or putting trucks that don't need to be on the road, so be it. I think when you come here and want to have answers that jive with your idea, you need to be open to not just the discouragement but the assumption that you are one who knows little of the profession.

Look I'm not being harsh, but you're talking fantasy land here man.

Spending $5k on a 40 year old truck? It's just not going to fly. Mass-DOT will rip that antique to shreds in an inspection.
And you could run over $5000 in fines alone if some of those DIY repairs are not up to code.

I'll give you an IT example by comparison.

I programed BASIC into a Commodore PET in grade school in 1982. Do you think my ISP startup can take over the service traffic for Yahoo?

It's just not in the realm of,,, dude it's just not reality!

Your "friend" with "the few local loads" is he gonna cover your Authority papers?

You wanna be serious, find a local small shipper with a few loads, be a middle man between him and your friend with the occasional load.
Get a finders fee for connecting the two and offer to run teams with a guy from the outfit.

Or you can blow smoke up my ,,, and tell me I don't know what I'm talking about. Best of luck.

Actually, these type of trolls/or clueless pipedream O/O's are increasing with clockwork frequency around here. It would be best if we'd all ignore such posts.
